Liberal millionaires begging New York to raise taxes

NewsMachete: Liberal millionaires are begging New York State to raise their taxes. Or at least, so it would seem.

In a letter addressed to Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and state legislators, the group — working in conjunction with the left-leaning Fiscal Policy Institute and Responsible Wealth project — called for a permanent tax on the wealthy to replace a temporary one, with the revenue raised going to investments in poverty programs and infrastructure.

We have had poverty programs for 50 years and they are well named, because they successfully keep people in poverty. As for “infrastructure”, what about money for the private sector, for businesses and investment. Don’t they need money for “infrastructure” too?  more

  1. Reminds me of a conversation with a very socialist teacher a few years ago when the government sent out surplus cheques to everyone in the province. It was a one time, credit that returned some tax money to everyone to also spur on additional spending and helping everyone out a bit (yeah it was a bribe with our own money but that isn’t the point).

The socialist teacher was frothing at the mouth at such a terrible use of “much needed funds” which the government should be spending. So I asked him if he was going to return his cheque to the government by either not cashing it or by sending the funds back allocated to a specific program’s budget. He just about blew a gasket and refused to answer so I kept pushing…finally calling him out for being a total hypocrite for not putting his own money where his mouth was after he finally admitted he was going to keep the money.

Socialism slogan…what’s in it for ME, using YOUR money?

  2. This people can, but don’t contribute extra money to the government because they know it will be pissed away. But they can do other things without penalizing people who don’t agree with them.

    1. For infrastructure, demand that the government finance a project through a bond issuance, and then guarantee to buy all of the bonds. Then forgive the indebtedness to which the bonds refer so the taxpayers aren’t on the hook.

    2. Start a private foundation to redistribute your wealth as you see fit. If you think sending people checks will cure poverty – although 60 years of experience shows this doesn’t work – then by all means do so through your private foundation.

    3. Establish privately funded institutions to teach children whatever idiotic principles you see fit. The goal of poverty programs seems to be to keep people in poverty, so you can establish a private institution to teach the students that they have no chance, so they better suck it up and rely on you. Not a message I want my kids to hear, but then I wouldn’t send them to such a private school.

Lots of rich people have engaged in philantrophy with private funds, the most famous of which was probably Andrew Carnegie. Sure, many of these folks were pretty evil in the course of making their fortunes, but at least they tried to atone for it with their own money instead of someone else’s money. But modern liberals don’t really care about helping anyone – demanding that their taxes (and everyone else’s taxes) be raised for good deeds gives them power, and that is what they are buyiing – power.
