Life on the dark side of Tinseltown: Skid Row is revealed in all its decrepit horror

DailyMailUK: A stunning series of photographs have captured the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles.

Photographer Suzanne Stein documented what life is like for the residents of Skid Row – a large area in downtown Los Angeles where as many as 6,000 homeless people live at any given time.

The images go inside the lives of the notorious area’s residents, including Doreen – a former firefighter who ‘wound up on Skid Row’ after becoming addicted to crack, Stein says.

Another picture was of Jerry, a man who has been living on the streets in the area for years. The striking shot of Jerry showed his ‘devastating facial injury’, which he suffered when he was shot in the face while waiting for a bus more than ten years ago.

In this particular picture, he was sat on the ground leaning against a wall, while a young boy sporting a Spiderman hoodie stood next to him.

Other pictures showed people being arrested by police, an armed man with a knife staring angrily at his own refection is a shop window, a heroin addicted woman who ‘uses her body to support her and her boyfriend’, and a man sat with his pet dog – which he rescued from its previous owner when he saw it being violently beaten.

According to the Union Rescue Mission, Skid Row is considered to be the areas between 3rd and 7th Streets, to the north and south, and Alameda and Main, to the east and west, respectively in downtown Los Angeles.

  1. Well it’s not just Hollyweird and it’s not just California. I’ve been traveling Cali’s Central Valley since Christ was a kid. Currently from Fresno to Gridly to Oroville to Red Bluff to Redding to Yreka it’s homeless people. AKA Crack Whores. Maybe so. But then you see the 65 year old couples that are homeless. Or the 30 year old couple with young children. Make no fucking mistake. Obama put them out of work and made them homeless. Fing asshole.

  2. Something to think about: Killery cares so deeply for all the marginalized poor, the down and out, of this country and yet she’s going to blow at least half a billion airing lies on the tee vee. That’s a lot of shelter and half way house beds, a lot of help for the people she claims to care about.

  3. And an afterthought, I know that not every person on the street wants to live there, but a large number of them do. This is the ultimate in “I don’t want to live in your civilized society and I’ll do whatever the hell I want to”. So why am I forced to care and provide for these people who choose this lifestyle? Oh yeah, because the caremongers want to feel good.

  4. I got my first professional tattoo right in the heart of that shit at 5th & Main when I was 16. It was to cover up a crappy home made tattoo I got when I was 12 or 13; Pretty important day for a 16 y.o. with a macho image to keep up and a paycheck every week from City Hall. 😉

Sometimes you would see dead bums on the sidewalks, or filthy hobos pissing or puking there. It is definitely a shock at first.

You could say that downtown experience helped me learn how to read people – size them up properly. Always looking over your shoulder and ready to fight in that shithole, in order to survive it.
People age really fast there. Death has a strong pull.

  5. Was visiting my wifes family in 2014 twenty minutes outside of the LA hell hole. And after visiting a popular seafood restaurant famous for it’s flavored shrimp in down town LA decided I just could not stand taking that stinking highway one more time and programmed my GPS to take the back roads. In this article is what I must have ran into what seemed like a mile or two of just endless homeless people camped out on the sidewalks. They even had these homeless parked right out front of a police station. If I did not have my wife with me and her friend and husband freaking out I would have snapped a few photos. I have not seen anything like it except when visiting South America.

  6. Love the picture of the female junkie still wearing the hospital band on her wrist from the last time she was undoubtedly was taken to the ER for the heroine OD. What other skid row flunkie in the world can boast getting the same medical care any paying customer would receive?

  7. Cruel people here in a country with 94 million unemployed/under-employed through no fault of their own.
There is definite age discrimination in this country, Try to get a good job after you hit fifty!
When your young it’s always “you’ve got no experience.” Then when you’ve got experience it’s all about them projecting a youthful image. Illegal? Sure but there’s no way of proving age discrimination.
My girlfriend and I both faced this time and again when we hit the big 5-0. You can’t get a job without a residence and you can’t get a residence without a job. even though I had money in the bank! Oh, you can’t get a bank account without a residence either! I had the account first.

  8. Democrat policies are directly responsible for this. The inability to involuntarily institutionalize these people and the continued restrictions on policing have created this in every city in America. For the insane/unstable, we cannot blame them – they are broken. As fellow humans we should get them off the streets, which would make the streets inhabitable for us. It should be impressed upon every sentient being in America each of these pathetic persons are there because of progressive policies and pound it in every day in every way. A shameful albatross to hang around the liberals necks.
