Daily Caller: France is pushing the European Union to adopt a new tax on big tech companies, but, if unsuccessful, is willing to implement the tax itself, the Financial Times reports.
“We will do it at a national level in 2019, we will tax the digital giants if European states do not take responsibility,” French finance minister Bruno Le Maire said according to the Financial Times.
French President Emmanuel Macron wants the tax to be in place by May 2019 before European elections begin. Macron is under intense pressure in France to strong-arm corporations to placate an angry middle-class that had protested against the French government for over two weeks over a proposed gas tax hike. Macron scrapped the tax hike Wednesday.
A tax on tech would also fulfill one Macron’s policy objectives and provide more revenue to the French treasury.
“If you want to get money … I’ll tell you where there is money. It is in the digital giants that make considerable profits thanks to French consumers, thanks to the French market,” Le Maire said. more here
Works for me. This is the kind of govt. big tech has been backing and want to import to the US, so let them suffer the consequences of their stupid commie rhetoric and totalitarian actions.
Maybe when they suffer the consequences of trying to kill free speech, liberty, and capitalism it’ll wake them up.
The French government doesn’t get it. These companies can move to any jurisdiction there is a fiber optic trunk termination.
Poor little frog really has to scramble to get his hands on other peoples’ money.
And when the high costs of internet and cell service become effective there will be more riots. What an asshat.
@Gladys
Whether it’s big tech, big oil, big pharma or the mom & pop store on the corner, the taxes are paid by the consumer (us). The bogyman the politicians claim to be taxing (punishing) is just the collection agent for the government.
A Korean acquaintance commented, “The French are very brave against the French; not so much against others.”
Well, maybe it IS time for the next revolution to start in France. Without one, they are on schedule to become an Islamic state and crumble into the compost heap of history.
European Governments running amok has replaced education, ingenuity, hard work and sovereignty with big government assistance and dominance.
Once the socialist masses have grown fond of government largesse, there is never enough. The socialist noose is tightening around the necks of Europe.
C’est la vie sous le socialisme.
I guess the French idiots running the government have never heard of the Laffer Curve.
Let us eat cake, so the elites can fly jets on our taxes.

Corporations don’t pay taxes, their customers do.
