Madagascar’s president says coup underway after army unit claims control of military

EuroNews- On Sunday, the minister of armed forces in Madagascar acknowledged an officer selected by a military group supporting demonstrators calling for President Andry Rajoelina to resign as the country’s new army chief.

Madagascar’s president, Andry Rajoelina, said Sunday that an attempted coup was underway in the Indian Ocean country after an elite army unit known as CAPSAT claimed control of the military, calling for the president to step down following anti-government protests.

The statement from Rajoelina’s office said he “wishes to inform the nation and the international community that an attempt to seize power illegally and by force” has been “initiated.”

“In view of the extreme gravity of this situation, the president’s office strongly condemns this attempt at destabilisation and calls upon all forces of the nation to unite in defence of constitutional order and national sovereignty.”

Rajoelina’s office offered no details on who was behind the attempt, and no signs of violence were immediately visible on the streets on Sunday. more

  1. Update – But apparently, it’s a mostly peaceful coup. However, it’s not clear who is coup-ing whom and why. We do know that kids are dying in large protests. If you are able to make sense of the article cited, please file a report. I can’t figure out what the hell Jeremiah Fisayo-Bambi with AP is talking about! (Not that I care.)

  2. Most presidents really want to keep their job. Don’t know if this one deserves it or not.

Hell, I can’t even name the president of Canada. I think he lives in Ottawa and is a communist. Do communists have presidents? I think they like committees.
