Magnitude 7.0 earthquake strikes Northern California, USGS reports; tsunami warning canceled

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — USGS says that a magnitude 7.0 earthquake has hit Northern California in Humboldt County.

The epicenter is off the coast near Petrolia, in Humboldt County, the USGS said.

Also, a tsunami warning that had been issued for coastal areas in California and Oregon, including San Francisco, was canceled just before noon local time.

“The tsunami Warning is canceled for the coastal areas of California and Oregon,” the National Tsunami Warning Center wrote on X. “No tsunami danger presently exists for this area.”

At least 5.3 million people in California were under the tsunami warning, the U.S. Geological Survey said in a yellow alert, which predicted localized but minimal damage.

The warning had been in effect from Davenport, California, to Douglas/Lane Line Oregon, the National Tsunami Warning Center said. more

  1. That’s the Mendocino Triple Junction offshore of Point Mendocino. It’s kind of difficult to explain, it’s the junction between the Gorda Plate (seafloor) and the San Andreas Fault and the geometry of it is such that it can’t be subducted. Everything to the north of it is going to get subducted under North America, melt, fractionate and power Lassen & Shasta and the cascades volcanoes, and to the south of it you get transform shear and all the volcanoes die (see Sierra Nevada’s). It slides up the coast at a rate of about 100 miles per 5 million years. Ultimately, the California coast gets ripped off the side of the continent (ala Baja California) and slides north and gets stuffed in the Alaska trench in ~100 million years or so.

    Something to look forward to.

  4. Davenport sits on a cliff above the ocean as does a lot the coastline. It would take a pretty big wave to crest that. Not like the coastline in Asia that got hit by the big tsunami.
