Major Automaker Says Union Deal Will Add Nearly A Thousand Dollars To Car Costs

DC Enquirer: Ford Motor Co. announced on Thursday that labor costs following a recent major union deal will cost the company around $900 per vehicle by 2028.

Ford, along with other major U.S. automakers General Motors and Stellantis, faced a six-week-long strike by the United Auto Workers (UAW) starting in September, with all three companies recently voting to approve new contracts through 2028. The company expects the new labor agreement to cost an extra $8.8 billion over the course of the contract due to wage increases of around 25%, accelerated wage progression and cost-of-living adjustments as stipulated in the contract, according to a press release from the company. more

  1. gm just announced a 10 billion share repurchase along with 33 percent dividend hyke so they were screwing their workers. actually gm can’t afford this blatant stock price manipulation. it is crystal clear n

  2. One of the young guys that works in our biz complex purchased a Ford F250 crew cab short box diesel last month. He was showing it off at lunch time and I asked, what they getcha for on that truck? $108,000.00 before tax and license. I responded, holy crap that’s what I paid for my first house, I hope you paid cash. Nope, he financed it for 15 years. The damn thing won’t be worth jack shit in 4 years. But that’s how they’re selling the crap they’re producing these day. An outrageous term.

  3. 15 year financing? Wow. I didn’t know such a thing existed. I haven’t done anything on credit (for various reasons) in about 7 years.

And the horn issue, like LBS stated is a CAN bus issue. Controller Area Network. There can be dozens of them and the 5vt bus can get fucked up just about anywhere. In some hierarchies (did I spell that correctly?) the 5 volts is single origin for the entire bus system. In other systems it’s different origin for different busses. Like say a 2001 ram, the central timing module is on a different voltage supply from other CAN’s supplies.

Part of what makes this a nightmare is when a CAN bus shits the bed the OBD also shits the bed. You may have to supply 5vdc to the OBD… but even then if you can’t start the engine you are going in circles.

  4. They’re not having CAN issues, they’re having mechanical failures in the high pressure side of the fuel rails, injectors, and just about every part of their Tranies.
GMCs are even more problematic. If you try and get your nice shiny GM/Bowtie diesel into a dealership for service, it’s a 5 week wait. Warranty repairs.

  5. I haven’t owned a new vehicle since 2006. It was a piece of shit with a bad clutch, bad clutch engagement design, VVT system that was absolute garbage, piss poor plastic shit everywhere, and a limp mode system designed by a queer.

So yeah, no CAN bus issues. But we were referring to 15 to 20 year old vehicles with CAN bus issues. Although modern vehicles also suffer from such garbage and often end up in the salvage yard.

  6. CAN bus is what’s responsible for all the hoopla unnecessary bullshit features that no one needs. The Mustang Dark Horse is a prime example of CAN bus gone too far. A muscle car that would be capable but they made it so a novice can drive it with screens plastered all across the driver’s face and no actual analog dials. An enthusiast car that’s not for enthusiasts.

  7. Quite so. Look at the MB C320, for instance. No dip sticks. Everything is on the computer. The side mirrors, the seat positions, the lamps, steering, brakes, wheel speed sensors, angular velocity sensors, cabin temp sensors, the wipers are on the computer, the windscreen washing fluid, the rearview mirror, on and on.

There is not much they did get correct, outside of the engine and transmission being tanks.

  8. The fake chip shortage really helped the auto industry. When they cut the supply of vehicles, people panicked and were happy to pay MSRP +$5000 for a new vehicle. Then finance it and triple the interest rate. Big $ MONEY all around.
Cash for Clunkers did the same thing, stripping good used cars from the market.

  9. I remember the Panasonic chip shortage with the Ultimate Chorus Fender amplifiers. I bought both of my amps for about 225. Now one is worth still about 225, and the other about 550. Fucking stupid.

For solid state amps they were good shit. That’s not saying much. But they were fucking good. No condenser degradation, no flatus on the low end, they tracked tight and the gain was plausible within limits.

What the fuck were we talking about?

  10. I will never purchase a Government Motors car … EVER
dumped Ford (my fav for trucks) during the Trump years
hate Dodge … K Cars anyone? …. yeah, Dodge Aspirin … btw, loved MoPar back in the day

… so sad what they destroyed

  11. The Thousand extra does not bother me, its the $10,000 to $20,000 of extra CRAP that I don’t want on the vehicle in the first place, as well as the Shitty engineering, servicability, & dumb things like 10 speed transmissions that can’t pick a gear.

    Cheers, Fuck the Technology!

  12. In the rust belt, a vehicle financed for 15 years will be ready for the junkyard/recycler in about 8 years. The frame will be too rotted out for it to be safe to drive and that will be discovered when the repair shop tries to put it on the lift and finds that there is no structure left that can support the weight.

Whomever is financing these vehicles for 15 years has got their ass hanging out in the wind a long, long way.

  13. The newest car that I ever bought was a 75 Honda Civic CVCC. It initially was a great little car when my wife and I were married in 1977. It got between 35-40 mpg on regular gas but was too small and eventually we got rid of it after 5 years.

  14. Japanese/Korean car prices won’t suffer from the same labor cost increases. And they are more reliable. I am all for buying American, if they can prove their worth. But they haven’t – and most of the Asian cars are built by Americans anyway.
Re financing, the car salesman asks ‘what can you afford to pay per month?’ and then backs into the right overpriced vehicle and overpriced financing that fits, getting him a bigger commission rather than getting you into a better deal.

  15. And then the manufacturers use every excuse to deny your warranty claim. One major problem is as the price of new cars and trucks climbs closer to six figures (and beyond), that rusted out POS in your neighbors yard is now worth it’s weight in gold. You can plan on keeping your 2006 vehicle “forever”, until some unlicensed, uninsured, drunk, “dreamer” plows into it, totaling it, and you have to replace it with something (as just happened to my daughter). The plan is to make car ownership unattainable for the middle class, and force us all into public transportation (except the elite, of course).

  16. Most people do not understand interest and financing, only monthly payments.
Easy calculations can be made with the 72 rule. Take the interest rate and divide into 72, the result is the number of years for the amount to double.
Example, current average home loan rates are 7.73% for a 30 mortgage. So 72÷7.73=9.31, without a calculator I can see that I will pay for that home 3 times. So, a $100,000 home will cost $300,000.
Actual amount is $257,000, the bank wins.

    That $108,000.00 truck will cost $197,173 @ 9% interest.

  17. I just paid cash for a 2016 Taurus police interceptor for my youngest. An addition to my 2011 Crown Victoria police interceptor. Both of my kids now cruise around like cops. Because they are cheap in comparison to everything else I can get. Plus beefed up suspension, durable interior, tough undercarriage, 75 MPH rear impact rated, stiffer door hinges, 220 amp alternator, stab proof seats, and more. $15k cash total for both cars.

Sort of like most products I buy. If there is a commercial option, I’ll take it. A bit more cost up front, but in the long run it lasts. Bought a commercial Snapper mower when I moved in almost 24 years ago it’s still going strong. My neighbor has replaced his 2x in that time because he insists on saving $200 up front for the residential MTD or whatever Home Depot China shit choice it is.

  18. I am SO glad that I have my paid-for used 2000 Toyota.
I really do feel sorry for anyone that has to buy a new car in today’s market.
Overpriced, lower quality, too many new “things’ to break.

  19. My last brand new vehicle was a 1997 Ford F-150 XL. I sold it to my son after thirteen years and he sold it to his employer years later. It’s got almost 450 thousand miles on it, now. the truck looks like crap, but that 4.6 L engine back then was bullet proof.

Change to oil, keep it clean, sharpen the blades (mower, tiller, edger), only use the best gas you can find.
One winter my son advertised “pick up your dead snowblower”. 28 out of 30 just needed fresh gas. Retailed them back out at $150 – 175.
