When it comes to marijuana, the majority of young Republicans are far close to the Democratic view than they are to older members of their own party.
Pew poll data shows 63 percent of Millennial Republicans — those born between 1981 and 1996 — support legalized marijuana. That’s a higher percentage than Generation X and Silent Generation Democrats.
I don’t get it. Pot is a terrible drug. A real de-motivator. Makes one apathetic, paranoid, and lazy – speaking from my personal high school experience. I gave it up my junior year and thank God for that.
What I don’t get is when people pick and choose when they want the government to be the arbiters of what is good and bad for you.
What if the state decided that alcohol was a de-motivator and made people sullen and depressed and they made it illegal?
I have no dog in this race, neither a drinker or a pot smoker,
so, from the sidelines I get a kick out of this as I see people lose sight of the phrase Don’t Tread On Me.
You chose to smoke pot and then chose to not smoke it because you didn’t like how it made you feel.
Shouldn’t that be the way everyone arrives at whether to use it or not?
I agree BFH. In the 19th century nothing was illegal, but you had to deal with the consequences of your actions. That’s what allowed this nation to become great. Let the losers lose. But don’t give them financial support they don’t deserve.
BTW, never taken a puff on a cigarette, much less any drugs. Although I did spend 4 years at Berkeley.
That’s a Libertarian point of view. I think alcohol is more deleterious than cannabis, but I don’t think the Feds have any authority, moral or legal, to make any law, whatsoever, concerning either.
Just prohibit the use of drugs or alcohol from being used as an EXCUSE for bad behavior.
Bearing in mind that one man’s Liberty only extends as far as another man’s nose.
Personal choice, personal responsibility.
The arguments in favor of pot legalization are all flawed. Unless you favor legalizing all drugs, which is insanity, the “Liberty” argument doesn’t work. This is not the 19th century.
All the comparisons to alcohol are idiotic, too. You can have a beer or two without getting bombed. There’s only one purpose to pot — to get stoned. It’s already creating problems in CO with kids getting their hands on it.
Tim, that’s the problem. Drug addicts — and alcoholics — don’t take personal responsibility for excercising their “rights.” Then society ends up supporting them and the families they neglect.
Which is why, as it is for everything else, it is ‘society’s’ fault. Because ‘society’ keeps enabling bad behavior. That is what needs fixing.
Some years ago I was at a street fair where there was a booth promoting the legalization of marijuana. I asked the promoters if they were willing to give up the welfare state as a trade-off for their cause. They were not. So I spent the next fifteen minutes telling people that approached their booth that they were not willing to do that whereupon most walked away persuaded by my argument. Ironically, this was in the state of Washington.
Pot can be a demotivator if used to excess (like anything), but used in moderation it can be tremendously motivating.
i’d trust the trib like i’d trust the clintons.
You deserve legalized drugs. #RepeatEndlessy #PeopleBelieveIt
I see the whole “pot is OK” thing as a tool of the Left – just like normalizing the “homo” thing – to destroy our culture. A metaphorical lollipop being offered from the back of a windowless van.
Many conservatives pick and choose- it’s just part of the human condition of accepting the complexity and contradictions of life.
I see too many ideology-addicted libertarians using just that tact – all while they’re being Useful Idiots for the Left’s purposes..
JannyMae,
“Society” has NO obligation to take that responsibility. “Society” chooses that responsibility in order to expand power and influence over the lives of others’.
As far as the good or bad for you angle goes:
If the government says that pot is as bad for you as, say: Cholesterol, Eggs, Salt, Red meat, Trans fat, Regular fat, MSG, Carbs, not drinking 10 gallons of water a day, second hand smoke, preservatives, Caffeine, dairy, sitting all day, off-gassing fabrics, C02, Fluorocarbons, DDT, Freon, and fossil fuels:
Then it must be perfectly OK
The heart of this Republic is that you may do as you please at your own risk to yourself.
All things in moderation
Even moderation.
Pot is a gateway drug….just say No.
Janny,
There are degrees of being stoned, just as there are degrees of being drunk.
Both have a “buzzed” phase.
Why did you say “beer” in your argument?
The debate is not pot versus beer. It’s recreational substance abuse versus recreational substance abuse. Choose your substance. It’s unfair to pick beer as the representation of the alcohol debate. How about Vodka?
I don’t now many people who buy a small hard liquor cocktail for 10 bucks a throw who are simply quenching their thirst.
No, as long as alcohol is legal, marijuana should be legal.
It’s hypocrisy. Alcohol exists for people to alter their minds, same as pot.
Every law that applies to alcohol should apply to marijuana.
All the arguments made against marijuana as a vice can be made about alcohol.
Why would all drugs have to be legalized if marijuana was made legal? I’m not following that.
You know what? Fuck all this. Seriously. I can’t get insulin, which I will DIE without, over the counter without 2 forms of ID, hba1c test, and a prescription which is limited to 4 vials before I have to go get another whole new prescription and people are arguing over pot.
Can we get some priorities here? Life saving drugs should trump recreational, but I don’t see any group fighting for that. Just some fucking hippies getting their way.
This is why I avoid drug threads like the plague.
It’s fucking infuriating.
Have a good week.
I had to get a prescription filled for a pain killer – tooth or something, I don’t remember, anyway I went to our regular pharmacy in Wally World and the guy said “you’ve got to pay for it back here” instead of at the checkout. I asked why? He said “it’s restricted” I said “everything that requires a prescription is restricted.” He stared at me for about 15 seconds, and then said “you’ve got to pay for it back here.”
The bureaucracy’s long fucking nose is too deep into the affairs of citizens.
What Czar of Defenestration said. That’s it exactly. The left has been pushing positive weed stories for decades. Now there pushing the homo agenda.
CZAR is absolutely correct.
By the way. It would not bother me one bit if booze was only legal to people over 25.
Or not at all
Czar definitely nailed it.
“Why would all drugs have to be legalized if marijuana was made legal? I’m not following that.”
simple…alcohol is alcohol is alcohol… there are not advanced levels of alcohol a spirit is a spirit a beer is a beer and wine is wine. That pretty much sums up the booze section. pot/hash is but a baby drug, a non-threatening drug if you will, and yes a recreational drug.
However….and this is key…..once they legalize pot they WILL push for the legalization of harder drugs for the eventual purpose of legalizing ALL illicit drugs….just like they did with gay ‘rights…it started for the recognition and it has metastasized to what we have today will the eventual goal of legalizing every form of sexual depravity….same with feminism, what started off as woman’s legitimate plight , has given birth to radical feminism and anti-male laws in the family courts, universities….yeah pretty much everywhere.
The legalization is but the first step, as Czar …..and I love how he phrased it…..”to destroy our culture. A metaphorical lollipop being offered from the back of a windowless van.”
