Maker of Electric Jeep Vehicles Closing Illinois Plant and Moving to Mexico

CTH: Stellantis is a multinational automaker contracted for the electric version of the Jeep Cherokee.  Citing high costs to produce electric vehicles, on Friday Stellantis announced a decision to idle the Belvedere, Illinois plant starting on Feb. 28, 2023, and notified 1,350 workers of the layoffs.

(Via Fox) […] “This difficult but necessary action will result in indefinite layoffs, which are expected to exceed six months and may constitute a job loss under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act. As a result, WARN notices have been issued to both hourly and salaried employees,” it said. “The company will make every effort to place indefinitely laid off employees in open full-time positions as they become available.” MORE

  1. The reason to move is Mexico’s minimum wage is $260.34 pesos per work day, or $13.15 USD “Per Day”.
I’m sure they will pass that savings on to the customer, NOT.
Anything to wreck the US economy.

  2. Back in the ’80s Jeeps were so bad that when you called consumer reports they had their own hotline number just for Jeeps.
I’m not sure quality is going to go up going to Mexico?

  3. Jeep quality has been variable over the years. Moving to Mexico will be challenging to put it mildly. I had a 2012 Jeep 3.7L for about 100,000 miles – solid vehicle, no problems, no complaints except poor gas milage. Frankly I think the first few years of any vehicle manufacturing moving to Mexico will be fraught with issues!

  4. Stellantis is the parent company of Fiat Chrysler, after FCA merged with PSA (Peugeot et al).

And I agree with the opinion of others re Mexican auto manufacturing. A 2010 Nissan Versa we bought brand new started falling apart as soon as the warranty expired.

  5. So, if replacing all gasoline-powered vehicles with EV technology worldwide is the CO2 cure, why are they (The World Economic Fascists) now needing massive carbon-capturing pipelines dug into US farmlands (via imminent domain)? They are also already doing this only to farms in other countries using the same excuse. Annnnd…..Why only FARMS?

  6. Belvidere, IL.

Next town over is Rockford, IL.

I can tell you a few things about that lovely neck of the woods, having fled there 8 years ago.

Rockford is a busted out ghetto after losing its manufacturing base. The closest healthiest employer in 25 mile radius?

This very Chrysler plant. The most sought after steady employment to be had for the last 30 years.

    …..oops?
