Manchin Won’t Vote For Another Supreme Court Nominee If Vacancy Opens Before 2024

(Headline USA) Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said he would not vote for a Supreme Court nominee were another vacancy to open up before the 2024 presidential election.

“I’m not going to be hypocritical on that,” he said, according to Reuters

“If it comes a week or two weeks before, like it did with our last Supreme Court nominee, I think that’s a time it should go to the next election,” he added, referring to former President Donald Trump’s nomination of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett right before the 2020 election.

Manchin opposed confirming Barrett at the time, claiming, “Rushing to confirm a Supreme Court nominee weeks before a presidential election has never been done before in the history of our nation, and it will only fan the flames of division at a time when our country is deeply divided.”

“I will not vote to confirm Judge Coney Barrett or any Supreme Court nominee before Election Day on Nov. 3,” Manchin continued. “I urge my Republican friends to slow down, put people before politics, and give their constituents a chance to vote.” more

  1. Someone I follow on Twitter reminded me that in 1852-3 the Democrats denied three of Fillmore’s nominees for the same vacancy (Fillmore’s last year as president), finally approving new Democrat president Pierce’s nominee. That new justice, John Campbell, left the Court when the Civil War began as he was a southerner, eventually becoming Assistant Secretary of War for the Confederacy. To be fair to Campbell, he was noted for his efforts in mediation and reconciliation, he wasn’t the worst guy. But the Democrats’ policy of not permitting other party’s nominees is not new.

  2. reading the entire article, it says he won’t vote for a nominee if it is right before a presidential election. He also says he would not have any problem voting for one now. I am not sure who wrote that headline, but it is misleading

  3. “Barrett was a mistake.”

Roberts was a mistake, Kavanaugh was a mistake. Barrett will side with the good guys more often than not, the other 2 numb-nuts can’t make that claim.

Manchin and Simema think for themselves, that alone puts them on a higher plain than any other Dem.
