Meanwhile, In Lubbock…Crime-Fighting Robot Outsmarts Suspect

GP: A Texas SWAT team deployed a bomb squad robot to subdue a barricaded gunman in a tense standoff that ended with the suspect pinned to the ground by the very robot he tried to outmaneuver.

Felix Delarosa, 39, barricaded himself inside a Days Inn motel room in Lubbock on Wednesday morning after firing shots at police officers, KBCD 11 reported.

The standoff escalated quickly when Delarosa refused to surrender peacefully, despite negotiators’ repeated attempts to defuse the situation.

When he began firing at officers again, the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office decided to strike back with a modern twist—sending in a police robot. more

  1. Technically. thats an ROV, not a robot. It wasnt doing things autonimously, a human was directly controlling it.

I wonder what it weighs? Just the servos ALONE can be pretty heavy, and Im guessing its built pretty stoutly besides, so rolling onto the guy probably did some real damage.

Look for a lawsuit before this is over.

    From the prisoner.

  2. …he actually missed the optics with the sheet, but that didnt really matter since the human operator had it in full view at all times and didnt really need onboard vision sensors for this.

Im really not sure what they achieved by delivering gas that way, other than fear factor. Seems like a thrown or rifle gas grenade would have accomplished the same thing, apart from rolling over the guy at the end. That was the only real benefit from a police perspective I could see, and it still doesnt guarentee he doesnt have a gun and wont shoot.

I wonder how much lateral stability it has? Its a little wide and has fat tires, but might tip if hit from the side with force, like a thrown chair.

But its on wheels, so you could probably slow or stop it with any kind of oil on a surface it has to traverse, but youd need at least one side well covered to wreck its steering. The tires are likely solid so shooting wont help, but the trade off is in traction, no grip, no grab…

  3. Years ago, the Dallas police department sent a robot down an ally after a perp who had shot a cop. The robot presented a bomb to the perp, and it exploded killing the perp. Don’t mess with Texas!
