Menendez Corruption Trial Opens Up With Hostility

DailyCaller: U.S. District Judge William Walls and a defense attorney representing New Jersey Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez traded accusations in the courtroom during the corruption trial’s first hearing Wednesday, the Associated Press reported.

Walls repeatedly interrupted the defense attorney as he accused the judge of disparaging Menendez, and derided his refusal to postpone hearings to allow Menendez to participate in Senate votes, the AP reported. Walls also criticized the defense for filing a motion to alter jury instructions. Menendez faces bribery charges for allegedly lobbying on behalf of a friend and long-time donor in exchange for monetary gifts and vacations to Europe and the Caribbean.

Defense attorneys claimed they only filed the jury motion in accordance with a December order from Walls himself, to which the judge responded, “Fine. Bill me.”  more

  1. Republican Representative Bob Ney (Ohio) went to prison in 2007 following conviction on similar corruption charges, some involved in the Abramoff scandal. The only thing that makes Menendez “special” is the little ‘d’ after his title. Hopefully Menendez will soon be bunking with Bubba in Club Fed.

I went to grade and high school with Ney. He was a bit of a prick back then.

  2. Looks like the shark knows M.
is guilty and is setting up a
    “biased judge” appeal. They
    will be throwing everything
against the wall to use any
    that sticks for future appeals.

  3. The question isn’t whether Menendex is corrupt.
THE question is WHY is he being prosecuted?

They are all corrupt, to greater and lesser degrees. They design law to allow, encourage, and ease corruption. Our Federal budget is probably 25-50% founded upon corruption (think of all the worthless maggots supported by stupid, cumbersome, illegal (un-Constitutional) agencies and departments – and how they are totally dependent on the extension and expansion of “government”).

So. Why has Menendez been singled out for “The Treatment?” I remember his run-ins with Obola, et.al., but that should have ended with Obola’s exit from the White Hut – unless the prosecutors are running on momentum (or the political equivalent of momentum).

    izlamo delenda est …

  4. A 1200 word story about Menendez in the NYT’S recently didn’t disclose he was a Democrat. If he had been a Republican, even if wasn’t in the congress and merely voted Republican, you can be sure the Times would have made that a central piece of info.

In another piece I read yesterday, another paper listed Menendez as a Republican. You know that was no accident.

  5. The Judge needs to keep tight control over this trial. I suspect that the Senator’s lawyer has been given instructions by the Democrat Party to drag this out until into January when Christie’s term ends and he can no longer appoint Menendez’s successor. Don’t rise to theatrical antics in the court, dismiss pointless motions immediately and direct a speedy but fair trial. It really ought not to go on for more then a couple of weeks. A guilty verdict and a motion in the Senate the next day to toss him out and a new GOP senator can be seated in a month.

  6. @sr449: of course you are correct about the delay tactics, but even with a speedy trial, and a verdict before thanksgiving, the inevitable appeal process with it’s built-in timelines will take us way-past the 2018 midterms and the inauguration of Christie’s successor.
