Celebrities work overtime to shape the culture around us, from star-studded PSAs to shows hoping to change hearts and minds.

Hollywood in Toto: Sometimes stars can make an impact by simply being honest with their fans.

Metallica frontman James Hetfield did just that recently. The 56-year-old suspended his band’s tour of Australia and New Zealand late last month so he could enter rehab after roughly 18 years of sobriety.

“As most of you probably know, our brother James has been struggling with addiction on and off for many years,” Metallica wrote tonight in Instagram post. The band added: “He has now, unfortunately, had to re-enter a treatment program to work on his recovery again.”

Stars of another era might have made excuses for the delay, citing exhaustion or tour logistics. Not Hetfield, who has been open about his ongoing fight with addiction. And at a time when Outrage Culture fires back for any minor miscue Metallica fans seemingly embraced their rock hero’s candor. more

  1. I’m not sure I’m so understanding. The poor guy slipped up. How many individuals and their families pay the price for his lack of ability to maintain? Maybe there should be a mobile shoot up van like we have in the US so he can indulge in a safe space without passing any judgement on his behavior.

  2. Seems like an honest, reasonable dude who also despises political grandstanding. His comments on climate change:

“I really avoided the press around the Live Earth day. I didn’t quite agree with what was going on there. Politics drive me crazy, and I don’t like talking politics. Politics get in the way of things; they get in the way of getting things done, and getting our music across is what we wanna do – we don’t wanna cloud it with ‘Democrat, Republican,’ whatever. Our philosophy is ‘think for yourself’ at the end of the day – do what you think feels right. I really believe that humans will survive. I have a lot of faith in mankind that we will overcome and adapt – whatever it is; whether it’s man-made or God-made, or Earth/Mother Nature – we have a lot of smart people on this planet that will make something good out of bad.”

Except for those that counted on a paycheck from his band’s activities.
