MotoGP: Bastianini wins Americas Grand Prix

AUSTIN, Texas — The Beast is on top in MotoGP, with a win and the lead in the season championship.

Enea Bastianini of Italy, nicknamed “La Bestia,” passed Australia’s Jack Miller for the lead with five laps to go and pulled away to win the MotoGP Grand Prix of the Americas on Sunday, claiming his second victory of the season and the lead in the title chase after four races.

And he did it on a track long dominated by Spain’s Marc Marquez, who made a valiant ride to sixth in his first race back after missing the past two after a violent crash in Indonesia.

“There’s a new sheriff in town,” Miller said, looking at Bastianini as the Italian donned the winner’s black cowboy hat. “That’s you.”

That made the Beast’s smile even bigger. No fangs, just nearly perfect pearly whites. more

  1. I love motorcycle Grand Prix racing, and have followed it for 50 years. It is the most exciting racing I have ever seen. The smaller classes like Moto3 are really fun to watch, as all the bikes are about even on power, and the competition is fierce. If you haven’t watched MotoGP, give it a try.

  2. Used to go to Brainerd,Mn.in the 80’s to watch the AMA races.
    Even had my 82 1000J Kawasaki on the track. Came into the pit shaking my head and wondering how what they did was even possible.

  16. I read somewhere that when Spencer’s laps were lagging his crew gave him more beer.

    I used to have an RD-400 that had been reworked into a clone of a TD-2. That bike was truly frightening.

  17. Anything on two wheels and a lot of stuff that should be on 4 wheels but instead only have 2 wheels on the ground or even better….none.

    But look at Nugats video. Car. “AHHH! I’m late for work!!!” Street bike. “Yeah man, I can catch him…gonna’ be close…” GP “This tea is delicious. Do I have time to finish the crossword puzzle?”

    And then once the super bike fires up the rider realizes his front tire is flatish so he does most of the run on one wheel.

  18. I got to sit on a Ducati 900 Mike Hailwood replica in a dealership back in the 80’s.
    I was still in college and couldn’t afford it.
    I still raced my 860 GT through the country roads near home pretending I was on the Hailwood.

  20. Yep. The ELR (Eddie Lawson Replica) would definitely be a bucket-lister for me, too. There was the street version but then Kawasaki made 10 that were pretty special if I recall, more track-ready. Always loved the lime green. I had a 82 GPz 750, a GPz 550, and a 81 GS 750 e.

    If you ever get around Birmingham, Alabama, be sure to check out the Barber motorcycle museum.

  21. I had a bunch of Ducatis way back. A Monster, a Sport Classic, 2 996s, and a 748.

    As you know Ducs have very heavy but precise countersteering… so getting on that RD, which didn’t want the front end on the ground at the best of times, was pretty bad. The steering was as quick as light and slicker than cat shit.

  24. You all do know that Bad_Brad had a MotoGP motorcycle that could bass fish, duck hunt and lift weights while machining aircraft parts….and street race your 68 Chevelle with a 396 . With a plymouth Duster 340 MotoGP…..

  26. At least out on the track you don’t have to worry about some numbnutz turning left right in front of you. I did a little trail riding on a small dirtbike maybe 50 years back, about my only claim to fame on two wheels.

  28. I admit I’m surprised. I often come in halfway through these deals. This is the first time I’ve seen willy come out of nowhere to start some ish’.

    Why? We were havin’ a nice time talking bikes and then you show up skeezin’.

    There use to be a big time shoe store prevalent in the malls. At least on the west coast. Track and Trail. Their headquarters were right across the street from my shop and we eventually got to know him thru his warehouse sales. Well he got divorced, sold controlling interest, and purchased a Harley all in the same week. He stopped by to say adios to his warehouse peeps on a Friday. Got ran over by some old lady in a Buick. Dead. One of the reasons I’ll never ride on the street.

    This is like when some kid come out to his parents. I’m in shock.

    Not even super obscure backroads with no traffic? What about airport runways?

    STREETS DO NOT BELONG TO CAGES THAT STAY IN THEIR LANES. The streets belong to those bold enough to take them.

    Hands brad pamphlets on safe riding along with a copy of the Wild Ones.

    And Willy….here’s a piece of advice. I’m a looong time practitioner of VooDoo as well as a student of human psychology. If anyone is at risk of an early demise…..it’s you. Brad has achieved emotional and mental equilibrium. That’s the key to good health.

    It’s only you who’s all agro and stressed. At this stage of the game I would make my bet 50/50 that you go out before Brad. Remember, I’m slowly working on my Doctorate in Statistics. All I have to go on are the data points you and Brad leave in your posts. It’s science, nigguh. (apologies to TommyBoy…been watching some Boondocks)

    Again, let whatever it is that’s eating you up go.

    Brad, what about wingsuit skydiving? No Buicks in the air.

  34. My other problem was shifts. My Ducs were all 1 up, the rest down. Then I had a Suzuki Boulevard that was standard. And that RD was reversed, too.

    And that RD would start reversed from reversed. It didn’t have a battery or a kickstart. So, whatever direction you started the engine was how it ran.

    Could be confusing at times.

  37. That RD also had a neutral between 5th and 6th gear. It was all fucked up. But it didn’t matter because in normal circumstances you never got to 6th gear.

    But still, you click 6 and dick, nothing, no dice. Talk about getting your head too close to duh earf.

  40. His wife died with him. Wow. Dude was a rocket. Me and my pals watched him just killing the field at that track in Livermore. I can’t remember the name right now. They had a down hill triple and the dude was hooking his feet under the side cases and going WFO and jumping as hard as he could right before he launched. He cleared all three. Except for one time. Dislocated both hips. A big wreck. All of team Honda stopped to make sure he was still breathing. One of my heros. I’m totally bummed.

  43. I like the Rube Goldberg engine setup. Also, explody pistons. No idea who decided to take the entire heat system found in a train …….and shove it all into the piston directly….probably some German dude….but dang, as far as heat engines go. It’s a fantastical design. And then to throw everything out of a car until you have two wheels and an engine…..that’s Art.

    People have been goin’ 100 mph on two wheels for over 100 years.
    There has to be something to it.

    I calls it exhilarating and freedom inducin’.
