New Evidence Points to Authenticity of Jesus’ Tomb Inside Holy Sepulcher

CNS: New evidence supports the authenticity of Christianity’s most hallowed and resilient archaeological site.

Last year on BreakPoint, we told you about the opening of what’s traditionally held to be the tomb of Jesus, located inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.

A world-class team of monument restorers who previously worked on the Acropolis in Athens was allowed inside the shrine to strengthen the structure and deep-clean its soot-coated stones.

In the process, they found something no person alive today had ever seen. Inside the shrine, encased within several slabs of marble, was a bare, limestone shelf. It gave every appearance of being the remnants of an upper-class, first-century Jewish tomb.

Other tombs in the vicinity supported this theory, but researchers still could not reliably date this one to within the time of Jesus. They couldn’t even prove that the slabs placed on top of it to stop pilgrims from chipping away at the limestone were part of the original shrine.

That is, until earlier this year.

  1. Still the location is based on the Emperor Constantine’s mother’s foray into the “holy Lands” to discover artifacts and locations pegged to “Christian” traditional locations she paid the indigenous population of Jerusalem to point out to her.

They were looking to legitimize a religion of faith, grab relics, and document stuff to then make part of their institutionalized government supporting cultic church.

If the discerning reader desires google “Garden Tomb” and then read the evidence for another possible site matching the Biblical narrative more historically.

Besides if you go into this church and see the coverings of this supposed tomb and the elaborate gold and gilded ornamentation located everywhere you’d realize on a good day Jesus probably wouldn’t want anything to do with the place.

  2. In an exclusive just a few days ago, National Geographic reported that researchers had reliably dated the mortar between the tomb rock and the later slabs to 325 A.D.—over 650 years older than previous estimates.
This is a little technical, but it’s still really cool: The Independent reports that the dating technique used—known as optically stimulated luminescence—shows when quartz inside the mortar was last exposed to light. The answer? Nearly 1,700 years ago—the time when Emperor Constantine, who legalized Christianity, is said to have identified the site and built the first church there.
In other words, the last eyes to see the rock where Jesus’ body may have lain were those of ancient Roman Christians. And we know the tomb itself could not have been in use for a couple of centuries prior to that. How? Because of what historians tell us was sitting on that Jewish cemetery for more than 200 years: a temple to the goddess Venus, constructed by Emperor Hadrian around 130 A.D.

  3. Last year National Geographic posted an article on an earlier phase of this project, in which one of the photo captions reads, ‘A conservator cleans the surface of the stone slab venerated as the final resting place of Jesus Christ.’
Really? Those of us who venerate it refer to it as the TEMPORARY resting place of Jesus Christ.
Heck, I could sell it for big bucks on Craigs List or ebay by assuring potential buyers it was only used once and only for 3 days.
Stupid caption, good article, crazy long http addy. If interested, search for Oct 31, 2016 article ‘Unsealing of Christ’s Reputed Tomb Turns Up New Revelations.’

  4. How did God do it? E=MC2, it’s an equivalency so it works backwards as well. Christ returned to the place we cannot follow as energy, hence his body was gone.

It was a revelation to me that God works through the physical laws he created.

The origen of consciousness, perhaps the soul is conjectured via quantum physics in Orchestrated Objective Reduction.

There is no conflict between God and science, only us stupid Homo sapiens and finite brain capacity.

  5. My concern is about those people who are more focused on venerating objects (and generating tourist money) than on promoting the birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

For skeptics there is enough evidence to prove the existence of a real historic Jesus from 2,000 years ago – but the crux of the biscuit (to quote Mr. Zappa) is the the question Jesus asks Pilot, “What is truth” and “Who do you say I am?”

Most of the time it’s nice to get archaeological evidence to back up faith issues but I don’t need it.

  6. @ Hans. I just read a book that goes in depth on all the historical and archaeological data regarding what is recorded of Jesus’ time on earth and such. It was very enlightening.
