New Jersey Considers ‘Social Equity’ Tax on Marijuana

Breitbart

New Jersey politicians could include a “social equity” tax in a bill aimed at creating a legal market for “recreational” marijuana.

FOX 5 reports:

Bills in the state Senate and Assembly would give cannabis regulators the authority to impose the “social equity excise fee,” which would help fund programs aimed at reducing racial disparities caused by drug laws. The influential Legislative Black Caucus has lobbied for programs aimed at helping Black communities, which have been hard-hit by marijuana prohibition. Black residents are likelier to be arrested on marijuana charges than white residents, for example. Senate President Steve Sweeney said a bill would dedicate money raised by marijuana taxes to social equity programs aimed at helping Black communities in particular.

The report comes after New Jersey residents voted to approve recreational marijuana use in the state. New Jersey’s constitution will be amended to allow adults to purchase and use marijuana without a medical purpose.

Adults of 21-years-old and older will be allowed to buy marijuana, which will have a 6.625 percent sales tax. Cities will be allowed to collect taxes of 2 percent on sales of the drug. more

  1. “Black residents are likelier to be arrested on marijuana charges than white residents, for example.”

Maybe they should figure out why it’s that way before they try too do something about it.

It may be that the white community is owed social equity money to help them offset the excessive amounts of Black crimes committed against them or the costs of paying for Black crime.

A few other non Black ethnic groups could be included as well for the same reasons.

…so maybe try not breaking laws and you won’t be arrested for breaking laws?

    …just sayin’…

  3. Let’s say you’ve got a white dude and a black dude caught with equal amount of heroin at the same time, at the same place.

Now you’ve got the black guy who is represented by various groups aimed at “reducing racial disparities” funded by a tax called social equity excise fee.

Lawyers now chase down cops making drug busts, like ambulance chasers, because their income will be guaranteed by a tax that is paid by the public, both white and black.

The lawyer slips his card to the black guy and not the white guy, “Give me a call, I’ll get you out of this.”

The black guy gets out of going to jail while the white dude rots in a cell.

Explain to me, real slow in words that I can understand, how does this “reduce racial disparities”???

…not arguing against your thesis, which is solid, but in your example they wouldn’t be doing the Black heroin addict any favors by getting him out.

Based on what I’ve seen on both a personal and professional level of heroin addicts and what they do to everyone who loves them, rotting in jail is REALLY better for them and for EVERYONE concerned, at least they’re contained and can’t get it so easy or steal from whole neighborhoods for a fix…

  5. Getting people stoned and keeping them that way will remove the need for the Dems to cheat in future elections. The people will be too stupid because the use of pot will reduce their effective IQs so they will vote for total scumbags without caring, as long as the scumbag keeps the pot coming. And once pot is legal, who’s to say that crack and other stuff can’t be legalized?

  6. This is like local governments promoting gambling. They encourage behavior of dubious or even negative social value and then explain that this is a benefit to society because they tax that behavior and use some of the funds to pretend to ameliorate some of the negative effects of the behavior they are addicted to maintaining.

And they call this “progressive”. More like a treadmill.

  7. Maybe Joisey could expand this brilliant concept: Legalize murder and fine (tax) murderers. Use the funds generated on programs to help murderers deal with the negative consequences of being a murderer – like people fearing and hating you, feelings or guilt or remorse, unemployment, etc.

  8. MJA, No they won’t get taxed in the ghetto because the illegal marijuana business is thriving in places where it’s legal. They can sell for cheap because they don’t have to follow all the regulations for growing and processing and dispensing — or the sales tax.

  9. I want to know WHERE the money goes when businesses are fined by OSHA here in Nevada? It’s at least $8500 a pop when a business gets busted for people not wearing masks in their store. The gov already bought 2 jets in 2 years…could he possibly be shopping for yet another one?

…not necessarily…Government of the Communists, by the Communists, and for the Communists likes to preserve their monopolies for themselves and their freinds and family, and like ANY good cartel will come after you if you don’t give them a cut…unlike a cartel, though, they can use military units to enforce it, just ask Emperor Newsome how THAT works…

  11. Supernightshade- That was my thinking, too.
No one is going to cut in on gubmint’s drug deals.
The funny part is, the legitimate (LOL) drug dealers will come up with a stronger version of drug which will end up luring them back. Until it kills them. But hey, NJ and CA and OR are providing more customers. Easier and easier.

  12. Riiiiight. Because potheads won’t go looking for a lower price.

Government grown weed is always taxed super….high. (pun intended)

There was a pot store in my town. It closed down. Why? Government rules and regs…and the fact no one was paying their outrageous prices.

Jersey will end up losing money just like every other state that tried to tax and control weed.
