NOLA: One person is dead and three are still missing after part of the Hard Rock hotel under construction in downtown New Orleans collapsed Saturday morning with what witnesses described as a rumble and giant cloud of dust. Multiple injuries have been reported, authorities said.
Authorities said 18 people had been transported to the area hospitals after a portion of the upper floors of the building at North Rampart and Canal Streets collapsed around 9:10 a.m. They were reported in stable condition. There are no reports of anyone on the street being injured. read more

From reading the linked article, it sounds like there may have been a LOT of cost-cutting in this project.
It’s Louisiana! Shades of Huey Long.
Modern American buildings don’t collapse – unless someone was bribed to look the other way on building codes.
If obama was a NOLA building inspector…
Woke engineering, because math is a tool of the patriarchy
Prayers for the construction workers and their families.
Modern engineers and modern engineering.
ie. the “smart bridge” that collapsed in Florida in 1 day.
Common sense has not been common for at least 2 decades plus.
re “the “smart bridge” that collapsed in Florida in 1 day”:
It was a ‘prog’ project, in which the woman engineer who designed it was touted for some feminist bullshit. Of course it collapsed!
The Florida International Bridge Collapse Is About So Much More Than a Failed Structure: It’s an indictment of the approach to transportation planning that opts for pedestrian bridges instead of making streets safe for people to cross on foot:

I would sue Hard Rock for everything I could get. Force the arrogant “Save The Planet” assholes out of business.

Hard Rock indeed!
Sucks to be caught between a Hard Rock and a place.
Anonymous;
I agree totally. The Florida bridge was a failure on many many levels that would not have happened if it was designed in 1946. It would have be built in place, with solid materials, with Mathematics (physically balanced), by competent people based on their skills not their “otherness” or “wokeness”.
The thing was packed with sensors to detect structural problems with wires and smart monitoring. Thank God the Golden gate bridge and the Hover Dam were built when they were.
Correction, Overbuilt with slide rules of all things!
Could we actually do it today?
I once read that the Hoover dam was overbuilt by a factor of six. In other words, if it were one sixth as strong, it would never fail.
Because of former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagen, I always refer to New Orleans as Chocolate City.
@Hambone
According to the old National Lampoon magazine (ca 1974), there was a baseball team based in NO that played in the Negro League called the New Orleans Chocolate Pelicans.
@Kcir
Overbuilding is a good idea, but if the design is flawed, we’re still screwed.
The Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed in a severe wind storm in 1940 or 1941. It was a magnificent looking bridge, very modern, but could not withstand high winds. It was, as they say about Ireland, a Terrible Beauty. A movie of it shows the roadbed violently buckling and finally crashing into the river below. Luckily, there were no human fatalities, although a poor dog died when it went down with the bridge into the narrows.
The next major bridge building effort in the US seriously studied the TNB for years before construction, to avoid repeating the same mistakes.
