I worked for a company in 2019 that owned Yellow Cab of Orange County, CA. It had been very profitable, around a million a year maybe 4 years earlier, before Uber. But by 2018 it was losing money, and the parent company was looking to get rid of it. Then AB5 hit in summer 2020, which forced ‘gig workers’ onto company payrolls. We just shut down the business and sold the taxis.
Uber/Lyft got an initiative passed November 2020 which allowed drivers to remain gig workers. But as usual, CA now ignores the will of its voters. Again.
How do you design an economy with no human workers? Who is supposed to buy stuff? Will there be AI consumers too?
