(The Center Square) – The North Carolina House approved a bill Monday that legislators said would prevent riots and civil disorder.
House Bill 805 would harshen penalties for rioting and inciting a deadly riot. It also lets owners of property damaged during a riot sue for damages, court costs and attorneys’ fees.
The measure, sponsored by a group of Republicans led by House Speaker Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, was filed in response to local and national demonstrations last summer after the police killings of unarmed Black people and the Capitol riot in January.
Moore said several North Carolina businesses were destroyed and looted during the summer demonstrations.
“In North Carolina, we saw many instances of individuals going and committing massive property damage, destroying businesses already suffering from the closure and reduce business because of COVID-19. To come in and find their businesses and the property absolutely destroyed [and] individuals assaulted,” Moore said. “In fact, some of the folks who got assaulted were some of the people who were, in fact, there for those peaceful protests that turned into this.” more
So will county prosecutors file charges or will criminals be released with no consequences?
Good luck getting a veto proof majority because that worthless cocksucker Cooper sure as hell isnt going to sign it.
“It also lets owners of property damaged during a riot sue for damages, court costs and attorneys’ fees.”
Sue who? The state? They can’t sue the actual rioters because the cops are given “stand down” orders and nobody ever gets arrested.
More virtue signalling by a political body, submitted for the purposes of showing the folks back home that their elected leaders are not the spineless simps that everyone knows they are.
I know it’s way too easy to be jaded about these stories, but if we all remember that there were yuge gains by Republicans in the state houses — RINOs notwithstanding — we will see more and more important issues and subsequent legislation coming out of these conservative enclaves. That’s a good thing. Forget DC, the focus is on the states now.
The “feel-free-to-busta-cap-in-their-sorry-ass” bill! 😁
There is no political solution to lawlessness. There is only a legal solution that involves the use of force.
@cato
It all depends on who is receiving money from Sore-ass.
@AA
These Republican-led state legislatures need to man up and start passing effective laws, not this happy horseshit that would have zero impact on real folks.
Here are my suggestions; make their state a Second Amendment sanctuary state, give ICE a free hand to do their jobs, abolish all Critical Race Theory teachings in the schools (and that dopey 1619 crap), pass laws that say biological boys can not compete against biological girls ( and no boys in the girl’s restrooms or locker rooms), make the state a “right to work” state, and make all unemployment insurance payments contingent on providing proof that they are actually looking for work.
Once all that is passed, get back to me, I got more stuff for you to do.
Who gets to define “riot”? I bet it’s the same people who determined “peaceful protest” and “capitol riot”
