Now is the time to hold VA employees accountable for their failures

WaExaminer:

Nearly three years have passed since we learned that officials at the Department of Veterans Affairs were systematically covering up severe waiting times at their medical facilities. Today, it seems that little has changed.

In Phoenix, where the scandal first broke, more than 1,000 veterans are waiting longer than 30 days to see a doctor. And despite veterans’ stories of neglect and abuse being headline news for years, fewer than 10 VA employees were ever fired.

The first step to fixing the culture of negligence at the VA is to ensure that bad employees are held accountable. That’s why it is critical that Congress pass the VA Accountability First and Appeals Modernization Act, which was introduced by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in January.

This bill would empower the VA to quickly remove employees for poor performance or misconduct, while adding new protections for whistleblowers. It would also grant the VA secretary the authority to recoup bonuses from unethical employees or reduce their pensions.

  1. Fire them all and close it all down and let veterans go to other commercial type health care facilities.

    It’s called service vouchers people!

Obviously the VA is a complete corrupt org and needs to be put in front of a firing squad.

  2. I once had to drive 2 hours to pickup a prescription. The local non-va pharmacy stocked the med but I had to get it from a va facility. So they paid me mileage to go pick it up. How stupid.

  3. Phoenix, Arizona……McCain’s back yard…..Where’s the outrage John, waiting for Lindsay Graham to lead the way for you? Or are you too busy screwing with Trump and supporting Islamic refugees? POS !

  4. I worked and trained in the VA in medical school. The VA is were the term “that is not in my job description” originated. The nurses are lazy and often steal the patients meds. The administration keeps busy by pushing paper back and forth with no intention of doing a thing useful. The doctors are the worst in any community and generally they are there as they have some issue that keeps them from private practice (like not knowing what they are doing). The system was originally set up as a place for soldiers with injuries that were not common to private practices. With our endemic war in the streets, doctors now have all the experience in dealing with war injuries and are superior to any VA. So, get rid of the VA, shut it down, sell off the property and give each vet a Cadillac policy that would allow them treatment and drugs. That would cost far less than what we are doing now and assure quality care for the military.
