The weird thing about Utah is that while its patriotic, conservative citizens will elect winners like the ever-amusing Orrin Hatch, they are also suckers for prissy invertebrates like Mitt Romney. And now Evan McMullin, the slightly less-lumpy doppelgänger of Brian Stelter (who is a potato), has taken a break from dodging his creditors from his last Toobin Zoom call of a presidential campaign to enter the Utah Senate race against conservative stalwart Senator Mike Lee. McMuffin has got the full backing of the Lincoln Project types, though it might be a hassle campaigning when his biggest supporters can’t come within 1000 feet of a middle school.
For reasons that utterly escape any sensible person, the citizens of Utah are the last stubborn remnants of those who respect Mitt Romney. Romney, a healthy and rich man who did not serve in the military (nor did his rich and healthy sons Skip, Scoop, Tagg, Tugg, Bongo and Fleep), was merely mediocre back when many of us squandered our vote on him in 2012. He was just sort of there, inept but inoffensive, gimp-suited up for a public S&M session with Mistress Candy Crowley. He was not a bad guy then, just a weak and kind of dumb one who thought the fact that he inherited wealth meant he also inherited skills. He didn’t. He’s a loser, a Chamber of Commerce-con on the cutting edge of 2003-era GOP decline management.
Romney lost in 2012 because that’s what losers do, yet while we held him in contempt for his flaccid weakness, we never thought he was a bad guy. He seemed to be just a Ned Flandersy neighbor from who you can borrow sugar from if you run low. But then he got his fussy feathers in an uproar about Donald Trump, as betas tend to do in the presence of an alpha. He ran his fool mouth oh-well-I-nevering about how Trump’s unbroken track record of potent heterosexuality made the Bad Orange Man icky. When Trump won a much harder race than the one Mitt blew, Romney came groveling to the new POTUS for a Sec State gig. more
As far as Utah is concerned, their affection for Romney is because he is Mormon and Mormons stick with Mormons. Visit Utah some time. It’s an eye opener.
Glad I moved away when I did.
“…has got the full backing of the Lincoln Project types…”
You mean homosexual pedophiles?
“conservative stalwart Senator Mike Lee”? Anti- Trumper.
$7+ gallon for gas might change their minds to vote true conservative.
“…rich and healthy sons Skip, Scoop, Tagg, Tugg, Bongo and Fleep…”
Yup! That’s right!
Bush Republicans are getting lots of ink lately. Why?
Mittens aspired to the alternate persona Pierre DeLicto because he was inspired by his dog’s ability to taste his own penis. Yes, that beloved family dog he lashed to the roof of his Amurrican station wagon.
Mitt is an open borders, corporation insider, pommade slicking weirdo, pious but unapologetically hypocritical. Yes, a Mormon. And like Liz Cheney he leaves a stain on the seat.
“Pomade slicking weirdo,”
I like that!
mickey moussaoui,
Yes, I voted for Mittens in 2012 as the lesser of two weevils.
But I did NOT vote for him on this last Utah Senate go-’round, and I plan on doing as much as I can to get a conservative in office, and Mittens out. Even my wife is disenchanted with Mittens.
As for Even A-Muffin………well, I don’t think he could win an election for small town dog catcher.
But let these political groups waste their money. It all trickles back down into the economy.
First and foremost, it’s Utahns, not Utahans. Now, on to less important things.
Mike Lee is being primaried because Mike Lee is a self-serving, bloviating do-nothing, which is to say, he is a typical Republican politician. Becky Edwards looks to be well funded and well organized. She may do well in convention, perhaps even get the most votes, but I don’t know if she could win a primary. If the local media and the Party operatives line up against her, as they did with Romney’s opponent, she will be fighting an uphill battle.
Evan McMullin is popular with the nevertrumpers here but they are not as plentiful as they like to tell people and the more calculating among them will stick with Lee. I assume McMcullin’s handlers felt the polling showed a reasonable chance of splitting the Republican vote enough, should Lee lose the nomination, to get the Democrat in. Maybe.
Hatch was no winner! He managed to do more good things than bad, but he did plenty of bad. His last few elections, he only stuck around by playing serious hardball, running all serious contenders off before convention until finally being primaried unsuccessfully in 2012. Romney — or rather, his backers — did the same.
