A rising gymnast who hoped to represent his homeland in the Olympics died Thursday after suffering a severe injury during a training accident in Russia.
The Indonesian Gymnastics Federation confirmed the death of Naufal Takdir Al Bari, 19, which occurred following a 12-day stay in intensive care.
“The Indonesian Gymnastics Federation is in mourning, male athlete Naufal Takdir Al Bari has passed away,” the organization wrote on Instagram. “The 19-year-old gymnast breathed his last after undergoing intensive care for 12 days at GA Zakharyin Hospital.”
Al Bari reportedly sustained a serious neck injury after he fell into a foam pit while training on the high bar, according to the Russian Gymnastics Federation’s social media post.

Since he was training in Russia, he was probably using worn out equipment, because Putin is using all Russia’s money on the Ukraine War.
World class competitor in several non-Olympic sports contests died last month while training. I think he was 34. Rylan Schadegg. Wife was good friends with his mom, and held him in her arms a number of times when he was a baby.
Follow-up: Rylan died early this month. Just woke up and I’m still clearing out the brain fog.
That young man did not have the physique, or posture, of an Olympic gymnast. I think he was way out of his league and, tragically, died because of it.
My guess is that the Russians were being payed to train him and they took the $$, knowing full well that he wasn’t a serious candidate.
