Oregon McDonald’s Now Hiring 14-Year-Olds Due to ‘Staffing Issues’

Epoch Times- An Oregon McDonald’s is now attempting to hire 14-year-olds and 15-year-olds to work due to “staffing issues,” according to the manager and operator.

“Now Hiring 14 and 15-year-olds,” the sign reads at a McDonald’s in Medford, according to photos posted online.

Heather Coleman, the operator of a McDonald’s, said that raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour at the restaurant didn’t attract many new applicants. When the hiring age was lowered to 15, about 25 applicants came in two weeks, she said.

“There are always staffing issues, but this is unheard of,” Coleman said, noting that the young employees are “a blessing in disguise.”

“They have the drive and work ethic,” she said in an interview with Business Insider, confirming that the restaurant is hiring teens under the age of 16. “They get the technology. They catch on really quickly.”

Coleman noted that she has tried a number of different ways to try and increase hiring but not no avail. It comes as McDonald’s and other fast-food restaurants were forced to close down their dining areas due to the spread of COVID-19 as well as state and local mandates around the virus. more

  2. When I was that age I cut neighbors’ grass, sealed their driveways, and caddied at at a local country club. I did whatever I could to make a buck. The independence that it gave was liberating and satisfying.

But to work at a McDonalds at age 14? I have my reservations. Maybe, if that’s all that is available, then so be it. Better to instill the work ethic than judge what’s the best job at what age.

  3. This is really good news. By the time they’re 18, they’ll be able to add and subtract and give proper change.
McDonalds actually has some killer tuition programs for employees.

  4. I had an early morning paper route when I was in Junior HS in the mid 60’s. I got up at O dark thirty about 4AM in the morning, delivered my papers, went home and ate breakfast and was at school by 8AM. I bought my first bike, a real cool Schwinn Stingray with my paper route money for $75 when I was in 7th grade. And I started working at my dads gas station during the Summer pumping gas between 8th and 9th grade when I was 14 in 1967. I maybe made a dollar an hr. but $20-$30 a week was a lot of money back then. I had 2 friends who were identical twin brothers who were able to pay cash for and buy a !969 Chevy El Camino with money from their lawn mowing services during the Summers while in HS, so I was in good company learning to work at an early age and developing a solid work ethic when I was in my teens. My dad taught me well although I’m not a good mechanic like my 3 younger brothers, I’m the one who is the brains in the family. I can tell you how and why it works but not how to fix things, I don’t have the patience for it. My son also got his work ethic from his grandfather and my youngest brother and can fix and build anything.

  5. There is an ice cream place in Rapid City that targets 14-15 year olds on purpose, to teach them a work ethic and how to keep a job. They learn that a schedule means what it says and that they have to take responsibility for their schedule. They also learn to work while they are being paid and how to treat customers. It’s a great way for kids to learn what school (and too often parents) no longer teach.

  6. I live there, and yes, they have a serious hiring problem. With bums begging right outside the McD’s with the help wanted sign out front. Part of the problem is the Mexican Cartel illegal marijuana grows pay more than the $15 minimum wage.

  7. The older kids and young adults in Oregon are sitting at home on their asses, collecting both umenployment AND the federal kicker. They’re making way better than $15/hour for simply doing nothing at all.

  8. I was working at 14 and got a real paycheck from a real business. I still have the pay stub from my first check. The thing is fast food operators have relied on adults to work there hence the recent push for “livable wages” These jobs were not intended for a 33 year old supporting 3 kids. They were geared to teens.
