  3. In the slim chance anybody’s remotely interested, the Virginia location is a processing plant. Boar’s Head Provisions Co. HQ is right up the road here in Sarasota FL. You wouldn’t want the suits to get their shoes messy, would you?

    Boar’s Head has been around a long time always marketed as a “premium” line of deli meats. I’ve never found any noticeable difference between them and their competitors and don’t see any benefit to paying extra for their stuff. Especially true if you put mustard on your cold cut sammiches!

  4. “Adulterated”… that sounds intentional. Shouldn’t it say “contaminated”? Is the journo being sensationalist, or just using the wrong word?

    Or is the journo speaking, in a roundabout way, of something done intentionally? Maybe by some of our recent arrivals from across the border. They’re all up in our meat-packing plants now.

  5. Their pickles and kraut are up there with Claussens. We like their bratwurst but if given a chance I’d have 20 lbs of Usingers bratwurst from Wisconsin in my freezer instead.

    ‘“Adulterated”… that sounds intentional. Shouldn’t it say “contaminated”? ‘

    …this is from the Code of Federal Regulations, 9 CFR III, sub. A, part 301, § 301.2 Definitions.

    Its a long one. I’ll put the whole thing below but this is probably the part that speaks to it:

    “(4) If it has been prepared, packed, or held under unsanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with filth, or whereby it may have been rendered injurious to health;”

    “Adulterated.
    This term applies to any carcass, part thereof, meat or meat food product under one or more of the following circumstances:

    (1) If it bears or contains any such poisonous or deleterious substance which may render it injurious to health; but in case the substance is not an added substance, such article shall not be considered adulterated under this clause if the quantity of such substance in or on such article does not ordinarily render it injurious to health;

    (2)

    (i) If it bears or contains (by reason of administration of any substance to the live animal or otherwise) any added poisonous or added deleterious substance (other than one which is:

    (A) A pesticide chemical in or on a raw agricultural commodity;

    (B) A food additive; or

    (C) A color additive which may, in the judgment of the Administrator, make such article unfit for human food;

    (ii) If it is, in whole or in part, a raw agricultural commodity and such commodity bears or contains a pesticide chemical which is unsafe within the meaning of section 408 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act;

    (iii) If it bears or contains any food additive which is unsafe within the meaning of section 409 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act;

    (iv) If it bears or contains any color additive which is unsafe within the meaning of section 706 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act: Provided, That an article which is not deemed adulterated under paragraphs (aa)(2) (ii), (iii), or (iv) of this section shall nevertheless be deemed adulterated if use of the pesticide chemical food additive, or color additive in or on such article is prohibited by the regulations in this subchapter in official establishments;

    (3) If it consists in whole or in part of any filthy, putrid, or decomposed substance or is for any other reason unsound, unhealthful, unwholesome, or otherwise unfit for human food;

    (4) If it has been prepared, packed, or held under unsanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with filth, or whereby it may have been rendered injurious to health;

    (5) If it is, in whole or in part, the product of an animal which has died otherwise than by slaughter;

    (6) If its container is composed, in whole or in part, of any poisonous or deleterious substance which may render the contents injurious to health;

    (7) If it has been intentionally subjected to radiation, unless the use of the radiation was in conformity with a regulation or exemption in effect pursuant to section 409 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act;

    (8) If any valuable constituent has been in whole or in part omitted or abstracted therefrom; or if any substance has been substituted, wholly or in part therefor; or if damage or inferiority has been concealed in any manner; or if any substance has been added thereto or mixed or packed therewith so as to increase its bulk or weight, or reduce its quality or strength, or make it appear better or of greater value than it is; or,

    (9) If it is margarine containing animal fat and any of the raw material used therein consisted in whole or in part of any filthy, putrid, or decomposed substance, or is otherwise adulterated.

    …theres others, LOTS of others, but you get the point.

    Federal codes arent about clarity, celerity, or coming directly to the point in a language ordinary peasants can understand.

    Its about keeping things open to interpretation and therefore manipulation for political and other reasons, and also making jobs for bureaucrats and lawyers.

    Lots and LOTS of political plum jobs to be awararded by partisan hacks to bureaucrats and lawyers in return for their support and the occasional persecution of their enemies…

  7. I grew up on occasional liverwurst, cheddar, dill pickle and mayo sandwiches. The liverwurst in the 50’s and 60’s was really good. Can’t eat it nowadays – gives me a stomach ache and it doesn’t taste very good. I blame bad cattle feedings or maybe no one knows the old recipe any more.

    “happy to cut the cheese on ‘head cheese’”

    …Yes, I know what it ACTUALLY is, but somehow in this modern day it sounds like it would have something to do with an unfortunate encounter with Kamala…

  9. “an unfortunate encounter with Kamala” -SNS

    Like you’re eating in a 4-star seafood restaurant having a fantastic meal and there’s a TV over in the corner near the bar and Kamala comes on. Suddenly, your meal plummets to 1-star and you call the waiter!

    “Could you kill that… uh… that… beo… TV!”

    🤣

  10. I prefer braunschweiger to liverwurst any day.

    When I worked for the hospital in Minnesota, we used to have pot lucks twice a year to celebrate people’s birthdays. One German lady made a braunschweiger spread that was so good, everyone begged her to make it for every party.

    The first time I heard someone say that she brought her braunschwiger spread, I said, “Brown spiders!?!?” Everyone laughed, and it was “brown spiders” ever since then.
