Point Park University: There Will Be No More ‘Office of Equity and Inclusion’

Say it ain’t so. Surely that was the response of many upon hearing the news.
Point Park University is doing the unthinkable. And whatever its reason, the move is bound to get culturally canceled.

On March 7th, the private Pittsburgh college announced a shuttering of its Office of Equity and Inclusion.

After the Spring ’22 semester, OEI is following in the forked and unfortunate footsteps of the dodo bird.

As noted by school outlet The Globe, SGA President Dennis McDermott wasn’t a fan of the closure. In fact, he intended to fight it with “everything in [his] power”:

In an interview with The Globe, SGA President Dennis McDermott said that SGA’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Chair Eli Bagaporo notified the Executive Cabinet on Friday, Feb. 25 that the office would be “disbanded” before the start of the Fall 2022 semester.

“I’m going to do everything in my power in my last semester here as president to make sure this doesn’t happen,” McDermott said. “And we accomplished some big things last year, and I can’t make any promises, but if I have any say in it, it’s going to stay exactly how it is.”

OEI’s official mission is stated thusly:

[To] wholeheartedly foster institutional equity, diversity, and inclusion by raising awareness and implementing strategies and tools to shift mindsets and align all members of the campus community with creating a culture of appreciation, acceptance, and inclusion for all individuals at every level of the institution.

Without the office, myriad attendees are likely wondering how an inclusive campus can survive. more here

  1. I have found there is nothing equitable or inclusive about departments of equity and inclusion. George Orwell would have been proud to have thought of this.

  2. Note that the article is dated March 30, so it’s not an April Fools thing.
Any department or position has a goal of surviving and thriving. Even legitimate ones tend to grow rather than shrink – look at the rise of administrative positions and costs over the past few decades compared to teaching positions & costs at nearly every school district or college. Of course all of this takes funds away from delivering a quality education. And DEI, the acronym for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, actually has a negative influence on building better people. All of these positions need to go.

  3. Wait……….what?!
The department head sez “closure”, departing El Presidente sez “over my dead body”.
    Well…….that can be arranged.
Except, not is all as it seems from the headline.
The closure of the office of Equity & Inclusion is merely rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Nothing is being closed. No one is being let go. Regulations and rules are not being revoked. Students and faculty are still being cancelled for doubleplus ungood unthink.
But…….I still like the idea of collage El President’s “over my dead body”.

  4. “…..the disbandment of OEI as a single entity was requested by the office’s employees themselves”.

Pretty bad when even the diversity hires can’t stomach this shit any longer.
