Police: 63-Vehicle Pileup in Virginia Results in Injuries

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) — A pileup involving more than 60 cars on a major interstate in Virginia on Sunday morning injured dozens of people, some critically, according to state police.

The accident happened just before 8 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 64 in York County near Williamsburg and for a time shut down traffic in both directions, Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said in a statement.

The agency tweeted that there was fog and ice along a bridge when what was described as a chain-reaction wreck began.

Photos from the scene showed a tangled mass of metal, with car hoods crumpled, windows smashed and a red truck plopped on top of another vehicle. read more

  1. been along that stretch of road many times … it’s a hi-speed free-for-all in the best of circumstances … within a 10-12 mile span 2 lanes going into 4 lanes, going into right-side 5th merge lanes, into ‘left lane ending’, into ‘2-right lanes turning’, into 4 lanes, then back to 5 lanes, into a ‘2-left lanes going into tunnel’, w/ a ‘no-return after this exit on right’, squeezing back down to 2 lanes … all the while going nominally 75 mph … just to keep up w/ the flow

… they actually have gates on exit & entrance ramps … so far, haven’t seen any that are closed … but have seen many closed, once you get through the tunnel … that’s another story

  2. When stationed in Maryland I used to travel 270 every day. Getting closer to Bethesda, there is a curve on the highway that, at the same time every morning the sun hit at just the right (wrong) angle for visibility issues, and traffic came to a standstill there many days. We were probably the lucky ones.

    God help them, it’s awful.

  3. I’ll take 460 and deal with the small towns before I will choose 64….. It has been a clusterfuck for years.
