Popular Mechanics Gives Instructions on How to Take Down Statues, George Washington Statue Is Ripped Down

RedState: You used to look to Popular Mechanics to figure out how things worked or if you were a nerd intrigued about building things.

Now, even Popular Mechanics has become subsumed by the leftist mania.

They recently ran an article from James Stout whose bio describes him as a Ph.D “historian of anti fascism in sport and runs a nonprofit that uses exercise to empower Indigenous people to live healthier and happier lives.”

Stout wanted to share with us and Popular Mechanics readers ‘scientific’ instruction on how to take down statues that you don’t like without getting hurt. “How to Topple a Statue Using Science” and subhead, “Bring that sucker without anyone getting hurt.”

“Should you happen to find yourself near a statue that you decide you no longer like, we asked scientists for the best, safest ways to bring it to the ground without anyone getting hurt— except, of course, for the inanimate racist who’s been dead for a century anyway,” Stout said. more

  1. …so, if anyone gets hurt while following your instructions or was incited to a dangerous, illegal course of action BY your instructions, that makes both you AND Popular Mechanics liable for both the broken idiot AND the wanton property damage, so nice job increasing your joint liabilities there, asshole, hope you enjoy responding to lawsuits…

  2. Ah if only they’d had this handy dandy information along with the tools a few weeks ago when they toppled a statue on the top of a 45 year old BLM father of 2 who was just innocently standing by.

    7
  3. I can help the blm/antifafags with this… you get some dynamite, see, set it at the base of the offending statue, sit on the dynamite (or it wont work) and light the fuse.

  4. The thing is we don’t need Popular Mechanics to make them bigger and stronger when it, and others, will be rebuilt, and they WILL be, maybe not there at that school in Portland? But in other places that welcome his leadership, his importance, his gift to humanity.

We, in the future, can also give Gen Washington the ability to at least defend himself. Think of an animated robot like statue of the future with a repeating rifle and lasers coming out of the eyes.

Any offending incoming intruder would back off real quick. This could be ‘operated remotely’ while we stay home from work. Former retired army snipers could do this from home.

We could also ‘program’ Gen Washington to kick the first asshole who tried to climb up right the fuck off.

Any one an electrical engineer (in robotics maybe) with a knowledge in firearms could chime in?

    I try to think big.

  5. Robo Washington needs to shoot flaming asian hornets out of it’s mouth.

Head needs to swivel 360 degrees….. Robo-George is gonna’ need some of that awesome kung fu grip tech from the 70’s….

Yeah….this could work. As long as we have a backup of 20 crates of dynamite underneath.

    Super Science is my weakness.

  6. As many videos as these dumbasses post, the main perpetrators should be identifiable. Make them pay for damages, arrest the looters. In the Minneapolis videos, one black guy is making off with 6-7 televisions. Through social media the arsonists should also be identifiable.

I live close to Omaha. The bartender shot a black guy. He’s been drug to the ground, getting choked out, DA called it self defense. But the “noise makers”, “BLM”, want a Grand Jury investigation. If the bar owner would have been black, it would have been OK.

  7. Sorry to tell you this.
I was a PM subscriber for maybe 20+ years.
But they became a left-wing mouthpiece many years ago.
    – Think global warming and carbon footprint articles galore.
    Same for BusinessWeek

  8. PM. Yep. The left destroys everything they touch.

As for the writer/commie instigator, a loving man who wishes to promote healthy lifestyles amongst the less fortunate, try not jamming your infested pecker into….
    Oh just never mind.

  9. Popular Mechanics as well as Popular Science have neither been about mechanics or science for at least 10 years or more. We used to read both religiously every month when they were relevant and had not become politically correct. The same with Field and Stream and Outdoor Life which have not been corrupted yet. My dad subscribed to all of them when I was growing up. And we read them every month learning all sorts of mechanical and scientific things as well as all about hunting and fishing from the outdoor and hunting magazines. And Mad Magazine as well, my dad always got as good a laugh out of reading Mad as we did. And the ads in the back of both Pop Sci and Popular Mechanics were always an added bonus with all the doohickeys and other stuff they were advertising.

“Any one an electrical engineer (in robotics maybe) with a knowledge in firearms could chime in?..”

…I do mostly 4-6 axis robot arms with some work on Delta robots, and while there’s pretty solid tech for actually aiming the weapon either to preregistered positions (easy) or to vision system acquired positions, the biggest problem with target acquisition is how to sense which targets are an actual threat. Vision technology is great at counting pixels or matching shapes, but not so great at fine detail in a broad area. Usually you can pick up general shapes in a large area OR detailed images in a SMALL area, but not BOTH.

Imaging is complicated by the fact that you have a wide variety of possible shapes, and it’s outdoors so your sensors can get fouled fairly easily.

Because of all this variabilty in targets and possible unpredicted movements exposing background people during acquisition, the best solution is not full-auto, but rather to operate like UAVs with a live operator operating the robotics via remote visualization and control, and untimately making the fire/don’t fire decisions with very rapid and stable robotic assistance.

You’d need an artisian to do the statue cut-in which is not me, I’m an industrial electrician, I do “Functional”, not “Pretty”, and the EOAT design will depend heavily on your weapon selection which is also not my expertese, but you could probably do an all right cell for around 600k, but you’re still gonna have to hire operators…

  11. …you COULD do some of THESE around town with more attractive faces, however.

…this COULD be enticing to some, but robots are UNFORGIVING and UNCARING if you put your hand (or other body part) on it, ’cause THIS chick could rip your ass to PIECES and not even know you were THERE…

  12. So will these individuals and companies promoting this advice be held liable for the statue that fell on the guy who’s dead or paralyzed for life? I certainly could see them being named in the lawsuit.

    ‘4. Almost a record.’

…I’m not on every thread, Rick, and I’ve been restrained even though our HOSTS don’t have a problem with me, but if I feel like joining the discussion, I will do so without consulting with you. I do not stalk you around the site nor do I comment on your posts, so I guess I don’t understand what you hope to achieve by violating the TOS and personally attacking ME. I have done nothing to warrant this hounding, but say on if you like, I won’t respond or modify my behavior any further for you. Follow me around if you wish, but I would think that there are more public figures that more directly affect your life that you COULD be discussing here instead.

As before, if you don’t like, don’t read. Many people do not, and I don’t care one way or another.

…that’s 5 if you want to contine your scoring at home, for God knows what reason you do so, but whatever floats your boat, totally your choice…

May God heal your heart of whatever hardness it has for me,
    SNS

  14. @Sns – of course you would be the one to answer…I had no idea.

So we could get together on a design, I do these little figurines, about 8 inches high to scale out of wire and wrapped in malleable masking tape.

Could we hard wire the skeleton or armature in the piece to move? I guess this goes to basic robotics?

To clothe the piece over the masking tape would be pretty easy.

@MJA – yes there is, in protected DC, there is one at his memorial…with his scottish terrier.

  15. You’re livin’ in his head, SNS.

I knew a kid in junior high school who’d stop me in the hall every chance he could to tell me what he thought of me. Most of the time, I had no clue who he thought I was, he was so off-the-wall with his opinions. I guess I lived in his head and he just hated me, or, maybe he wanted me to be his “friend” and all I ever did was ignore him completely. The kid was a creep: short, fat, punky and not too bright.

I don’t care any more about people who don’t know how to have a good conversation with good company. It’s an art form and always worth trying to improve.

…a 8″ figure would be challenging, as the smallest premade robot arm is about 20″, and the controller absolutely obnoxious. Probably better off improvising with maybe a Raspberry Pi for control and RC airplane servos, but you’re not getting a vision system on that scale unless you do it as an external God’s Eye type view.

And I’m REALLY not sure how you’d ARM something on that scale effectively…

  17. It gets worse: they’re publishing articles on how to beat police riot defenses.

And we were worried about Iranian sleeper cells??

Treason is everywhere: we have to push back or we’re dead.

    5
  18. Jeeze, why make it so difficult? Proximity detector and 20 cases of dynamite.

ANYONE approaching robo George is gonna’ get busted up. We need to start substituting “robo=George” for “the boogy man” in our conversations with our children.

People will just instinctively learn to avoid fuggin’ with statues.

“Damn Corey, I’d sure love to take down that General Lee statue but he’s watching me all the time….just waiting to go off…”

It’d keep my hands in my pockets if I knew art was pretty much lethal.

    6
  19. I don’t think Pop. Mechanics will get too many subscriptions from Antifa punks, no matter how many articles it has on how to destroy things.

    5
  20. I like it.

Seems to lack the unnerving terror a proximity detector set to whatever unknown distance it’s set at would have…..

but it’s reactive…..so it would allow thugs to get reeeeeal close before detonating.

    That sounds satisfying.

P.S. Just ignore Super Rick. Dude had a meltdown over Jimmy Buffey. Hilariously tragic. I’d just let him work through his angst. Fellow has…… issues.

    7
  21. SNS; that robot chick video is both interesting and unnerving, thanks for the link.

And what about, “…frickin sharks with laser beams on their heads” in a moat swimming around the statue?

    5
  22. Who the fuck is Rick to be calling out Supernightshade on the number of posts?

    When @Rick or @SuperRick posted…how many times???

    What’s your problem?

Are you @RickWilson or something like that douche?

So what? People like to post?

    6
  23. Rick, or whatever your name is, what is your point here? Move on if you don’t like how often people post, that is very juvenile of you to try and make a point of it?

    Why?? Why be mean?

Supernightshade is a very thoughtful person. Don’t be so intimated by ideas.

    7
  24. …sorry, I just do the robots that stack the cases that make the pallets full of bagged meal kits, we just put in them what Uncle Sugar TELLS us to put in them…

    …so, in a way…

    …it’s Trump’s fault!

I had a similar experience with Time 60 years ago. When the leftist Clare took over and installed the progressive Otto it became a far left mouthpiece. 60 years ago. I kept reading their “Ugly American” articles and thinking to myself “This is an aberration”. It took me 5 years to realize That the Time of ’65 was the opposite of the Time of54! And 2 more years to cancel! My Gaelic clan name is “Stoney place” My wife translates it as “Cement head”. With the leftist Clare I was slow on the uptake!
