Milei is awe-inspiring. I was very pleased when he made it to the run-off and ecstatic that he won. But that all pales in comparison to what the man has accomplished in such a vanishingly small time. It’s hard to believe, but there it is!

There are thriving black-market towns at the borders of every country in South America. Subsidies and tariffs drive a multi-billion dollar smuggling industry that ships goods from Colombia to Argentina and Chile and all points in-between.
Tanker convoys with machine-gun carrying armed guards riding on top and armored cars leading and following regularly transported subsidized Ecuadorian fuel across the border into Peru and Colombia.
You can’t cheat the market economy. Work against it and it will always break you. It isn’t an ideology, it simply exists, like a natural law.
More information about the insane Ecuadorian fuel subsidies and how they have broken every government since Febres-Cordero. The national oil refinery in Esmeraldas has a history of inefficiency, breakdowns and corruption. This has forced the government to import fuel from its neighbors at market rates and sell it at heavily subsidized rates that trigger smuggling much of that fuel back to where it was purchased, to be sold again at just below market rates.
Not to be outdone by the smugglers, corrupt managers at the refinery will often fill ghost tankers with refined fuel, bought for the cost of a bribe. This often explains the many (reported) shortfalls in production…and that was happening before the country started to seriously tank.
Correa beat them both by signing long-term (multidecadal) contracts with the Chinese to sell crude oil locked at ridiculously low rates. He and his cronies pocketed millions for losing Ecuadorians billions in future revenue.
If you take away the subsidy, the mobs toss you off the Presidential balcony onto pitchforks…not necessarily metaphorically. Sheeple get hangry when the trough is empty.

Putting hundreds of thousands of people out of work, even though I agree with the need, these moves enlarge a huge opposition party.
