President Trump Requires Sponsors of Immigrants to Pay for their Social Services

Bongino.com: President Trump has signed a memorandum enforcing a provision requiring sponsors of legal immigrants to pay back the government for any social services used by the immigrant.

The provision was part of the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) and Welfare Reform laws enacted by then-President Bill Clinton. The law stated that immigrants should “not depend on public resources to meet their needs.” However, the provision has not been enforced.

Fox News reports, “Under the provision, each future sponsor of an immigrant would need to sign an affidavit that would spell out the financial responsibilities for the sponsored immigrant and create a collection mechanism to recover funds from the sponsor. The Department of Health and Human Services is to collect the data of the sponsors and the immigrants, while the Treasury Department would collect the funds.” more

  1. For me to move to the Great White North, my wife had to prove that she could support me for three years because I would not be eligible for any social assistance during that time.

  2. This might slow down chain migration as a result of anchor babies legitimizing illegals.

If it can make it through the Leftist court challenges which are going to be filed shortly (probably in the 9th to start).

  3. Good, no more corporate freeloading off the US taxpayer. You import workers on the cheap, you greedy motherfuckers, then you pay for their food, housing, and health care if you plan to pay them minimum wage, you fucking cunts.

  4. I view this as nothing more than GOP virtue signalling. The left panders to it’s base by promising free stuff (healthcare, college,a living wage, etc.) while the right panders by promising to be more judicious and abstemious with tax dollars, and we believe them.

Of course immigration should be merit based, only allowing those that would be a net gain, those that can produce and be of benefit to the nation as a whole, but the reality is thus, once they are here we are on the hook to provide for those that can’t/won’t provide for themselves. Yeah, sponsors can sign silly papers taking responsibility but once here, the immigrants melt into the woodwork, they change names, they move, they make it impossible to keep track, especially the welfare services they partake in.

This is like the nonsense about taking away funding for Sanctuary Cities or making California pay back all that federal grant money for their ill advised bullet train to nowhere, of course they should, but they won’t. This is just one more promise the government makes with no mechanisms in place to deliver.

  5. I might be inclined to agree with you, @Rich Taylor, if it were the Turtle making this proposal. But it’s the administration, who at least seems to be trying to live up to the promises they’ve made. I understand and agree that without a mechanism currently in place to compel those involved to hold up their end of the deal it becomes a “wait and see” thing.
