Pluralist: Soviet Union officials were eager to exploit a sister-city relationship between a Bernie Sanders-led Burlington, Vermont, and a Russian provincial capital in 1988 as a way to push its “information-propaganda efforts,” The New York Times reported Friday.
As mayor of Burlington in the 1980s, Sanders made outreach efforts officials of Yaroslavl, located northeast of Moscow.
Documents uncovered in the Russian city by The Times show how the Soviet Union viewed Sanders’ efforts. They describe how the Soviets encouraged establishing closer ties as a way to “reveal American imperialism as the main source of the danger of war.”
The Times reviewed 89 pages of letters, telegrams and other internal documents that detailed Sanders’ attempts to establish the relationship in the dying years of the Soviet Union under Mikhail Gorbachev. The communist U.S.S.R. officially collapsed in 1991.
The records suggest that while Sanders was not the only American targeted for propaganda, the Russians were prepared to capitalize on his affinity for Russia, according to The Times.
