Stuff I learn from my dad: Once a week my dad takes all five Jack Russel Terriers to the horse barn. The dogs know and get so excited in anticipation of the coming rat slaughter. One time I asked my dad, “Why not just keep the dogs in the barn?”. To which he replied, “Because rats are smart sons-a-bitches and they’ll get used to a dog or cat being around all the time and they will adjust their behavior accordingly to get at the feed. Better to surprise them.”
Those dogs go nuts and don’t stop until everything rat related is dead.
If I had a rat problem I would give that guy a call. The Rat Wrangler, and his dogs. I bet those dogs get excited as hell to get out and chase down some rats.
Have you ever tried to get a cat to do anything? They’d rather play with it. And then they get bored. So maybe one rat per cat per day.
Check out the mink man on youtube. He runs dogs too.
Homeless fed!
Two fer’.
It’s been my experience that certain cats can be good mousers. But not all. Most just like to play with the mouse. Or bring it to you to play with it. Not helpful. ;-p Most cats nowadays just don’t have the kill instinct that makes them good mousers.
Much less ratters.
But just about any dog, and especially those that have terrier in them, can and will go after something in their territory. The more experience they have the better they get at it too.
At one time we had a farm dog that had some Airedale Terrier in him. The entire time he was alive, we rarely saw squirrels or rabbits “alive” in our yard. Within a few months after he died, it was almost weird to suddenly start seeing both running around and wonder where they’d been all those years. Heh.
So, yeah, dogs for the win here.
And one other thing, in that video they show the cats being fed. Well feed cats are definitely not going to be out catching rats, feral or not. Somebody is ripping somebody off.
In the middle ages, they rounded up all the stray cats and dogs in Europe because they were certain that’s what was causing the spread of the plague. The science was settled until it wasn’t.
Find something that will eat the Demon-Rats – Chicago will be much better off!
Oh, rats are the symptom – not the disease.
izlamo delenda est …
Cats make good mousers but they tend to keep away from rats that are close to their own size!
They should get pythons, pythons are good at catching rats and other small pest animals as well.
The Rat Wranglers – – good name for a band.
Amazingly, NYC is ahead of the curve on this:
