Puerto Rican progressives are using ‘rigged’ ballots to force the island into statehood

BPR: Puerto Rico’s New Progressive Party (NPP) is using “rigged” data to claim the majority of Puerto Ricans support its push for U.S. statehood, rival party president Héctor Ferrer told reporters Wednesday in Washington, D.C.

Ferrer currently serves as president of Puerto Rico’s Popular Democratic Party (PDP), which advocates for the island to remain a commonwealth of the U.S. rather than adopt statehood or complete independence. Ferrer is running to replace Ricardo Rosselló, a member of the NPP, as governor of the island.

Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico Jennifer Gonzalez, a statehood supporter along with Rosselló, filed a bill in Congress requesting statehood for the island commonwealth based on the outcomes of the two most recent plebiscites — an island-wide vote — on the issue.

Puerto Rico has held a plebiscite seven times on the commonwealth’s relationship with the U.S. The fight is focused between Puerto Ricans who want to remain a commonwealth or become a state, though a small faction supports independence. The commonwealth status quo option won four plebiscites between 1950 and 1993, according to documents given to The Daily Caller News Foundation.

The option “commonwealth” was rewritten as “territorial commonwealth” in 1998. The PDP protested the change and campaigned for Puerto Ricans to vote none-of-the-above. The campaign seemed to work with half of voters choosing none-of-the-above versus 45 percent of the vote for statehood.

Statehood has won the two most recent plebiscites held in 2012 and 2017, but the referendums were “rigged” by pro-statehood administrations, according to Ferrer.  more here

  1. The corruption and apathy of Puerto Rican government that was illustrated after the last hurricane was obvious. All the PR rulers could do is scream for more aid then failed in their own responsibilities to distribute the same. The same PR rulers then falsely claimed they were not receiving aid until video showed piles of undistributed materials.
Why in the hell should Americans throw good money after bad. We do not need another shithole to support. We already have DC.

  2. The Puerto Ricans are a strong people.
They should declare their sovereignty and learn to stand on their own
They have the beaches, they have the tropic clime, they should turn their shithole into a resort center and learn to make their own money

  3. As I have said and written, ad nauseam, return it to Spain.
Spain needs another island in which to house her moslems.

The war is over. We’ve occupied Puerto Rico long enough. Time to just ‘move on’ and be done with it.

  4. “Puerto Rico has held a plebiscite seven times…”. Typo, should be parasites.

PR is akin to that 30 yo grifter in NY who’s parents sued to extract from their basement.
Thanks to Paul Ryan’s congressional maneuvering, PR was granted debt restructuring in the form of Promesa as a reward for the graft/corruption. Now tack on Maria.

PRicans have fled to the US and we’re paying the upkeep ‘til the island is habitable IF they choose to return.

Meanwhile, crypto currency billionaires are flocking to the island to take advantage of that sweet sweet tax exemption.
    Cut. Them. Loose.

  5. The Puerto Rican commies are merely puppets for the obama-commies here that are in turn puppets of the soros-eu commies.
The end goal is total commie control of all of our branches of government and PR statehood would be a pretty distinct foot forward to that end.

  6. It makes me chuckle to remember their vehement protests (Jesse Jackson supported) to get US bases off the island. They succeeded. And lost huge revenue from all the associated economic activity. It exacerbated their financial ruin.

    Buenos dias, pendejos.
