14 Comments on Rare footage of the 1919 fixed world series
Good times!!
Wow !
Corruption in Chicago?
Who woulda thought that?
Some things do change, it just gets worse.
I didn’t know everyone was black back then.
They were super fast people but very slow readers.
Why were they burning down Wrigley at both sides of the stadium during the game?
I understand the White Sox uniforms, but hello? Could the Reds wear some red and not ALL gray? People were so stupid back then.
“Say it ain’t so!”
Remember, this was a 9 game series. And when a non-crooked pitcher was on the mound, the White Sox destroyed Cincinnati. The Reds got nothing and the meager hitting by the crooked Sox players was enough to win. Chicago should have swept that series in 5 straight. And they got next to no money for their cheating. Idiots.
I was flipping through stations when I stumbled onto a replay of the 1968 World Series on ESPN Classic where Bob Gibson struck out like 19 batters. The crowd was completely dressed in full suits, with hats, white shirts and ties, the women in Sunday best skirts. Same in this 1919 clip. Completely different times nowadays – nowhere near as civilized.
My dad was born in 1919.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”
Loved the scene of the large crowd “watching” the game from New York, at about 1:15.
Did that white foam on either side of the film eventually eat up all those people?
Interesting to note the cloud of cigarette smoke hanging over the crowd in the first minute or two of the vid.
golly the whole time i was waiting for someone to read the thing to me to tell me what was going on
