Raul Castro to remain in office until April, elections postponed because of Hurricane Irma

Yes. Because of the hurricane. Not because he’s a dictator who is going to win, anyway.

Castro, 86, had initially said he would retire at the end of his two terms on Feb. 24, Miami Herald reported. The election for the new National Assembly was also scheduled to be held then.

The official Communist Party newspaper Granma published the announcement and said the damage caused by Hurricane Irma, which struck the island in September, forced the delay of Cuba’s political cycle.

Some analysts predicted Castro would extend his time in power because of recent events, including its economy in recession and the diplomatic crisis involving health attacks on U.S. diplomats in the city’s capital Havana, according to the Miami Herald.

It’s still unclear who would succeed Castro, who took power in 2008 and replaced late leader and brother Fidel Castro. Cuban first vice president Miguel Diaz-Canel has been seen as a potential candidate.

The upcoming election is the first since Fidel Castro, who died in November 2016, reintroduced a limited election in 1976, the Miami Herald reported.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  1. Uh huh, riiiight. The hurricane. Hey, speaking of coinkydinks, isn’t that about the time Hillary is going to be indicted? Could her old pals be saving a place for her? Is there going to be a conflict of interest? Oblowme’s going to be looking for a place to hide, after his Hezbolla drug scandal, about the same time. Does that suck or what?

  2. The counters votes always come up with the correct numbers to help Raul. if they don’t they will have an accident clean their weapon you accidentally shoot them several times in the back of the head.

  3. What good does it do to vote when:

    They throw your ballot away.
They are monitoring your vote with cameras.
    Political executions take place.

Oh there’s an election that’s already been decided? Gee, where is the polling station?

  4. I grew up in Miami and constantly heard that the Cuban community was going to storm ‘their island’ and string up the Castro family.

Well, not so much. Between finding the best tres leches in Hialeah, planning what to wear at this year’s Calle Ocho Festival, and protesting conservative immigration policies it kept getting pushed onto the back burner. Of course they did get rid of Fidel – when he died from old age after decades as dictator. Now they are entrenched in Miami politics and are determined to bankrupt the city while turning it into a Havana suburb. Reminds me of all the Cali natives that bail, move a state or two over and begin messing up their new home’s successful conservative leadership.
