Rep. Don Young, a gritty Alaskan who served in Congress since Richard Nixon’s presidency and relentlessly championed funding for his state, died Friday during a flight home. He was 88.
Young’s office announced his passing, saying he was accompanied by his wife Anne when he lost consciousness on a flight from Los Angeles to Seattle.
“It’s with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce Congressman Don Young, the Dean of the House and revered champion for Alaska, passed away today while traveling home to Alaska to be with the state and people that he loved,” the office said.
Young, a Republican, was the oldest member of Congress, serving 25 terms since winning office in a special election in 1973. He was seeking a 26th term and was heading home for re-election fund-raisers next week. more

He asked the voters in his district 25 times to make him their representative in Congress. And 25 times, those voters said “yes”. As much as I share in your frustration, brother, those voters had the power (and responsibility!) to say “no” – to limit his terms of service – for nearly two generations… but didn’t.

Being a term limits kind of guy, I wasn’t fond of the fact that Young spent 50 years there but he was, especially when he was younger, an effective rep for Alaska. I know if you were having some kind of problem with the Feds and contacted Young, he’d at least try to do something about it.
He kept getting re-elected because he brought billions of Fed dollars into the state and his opposition usually consisted of AOC types except even more intelluctually challenged.
As for the money that he brought into the state, I’ve been telling people for thirty years, every one of those Fed dollars has a string attached. Doesn’t matter, money trumps freedom for 95% of the population.
