DC: Republican Rep. Martha McSally pulled ahead of two other candidates on Tuesday with a landslide primary victory, earning herself a shot at becoming Arizona’s first female senator.
McSally won the nomination with 51.4 percent of the vote, beating out Dr. Kelli Ward who got 28.6 percent and former Sheriff Joe Arpaio who took 20 percent of votes, The New York Times reported Tuesday at the time the race was called. McSally will face off against Democratic nominee Rep. Kyrsten Sinema in the November midterm race, who won 82.4 percent of the vote against her progressive opponent Deedra Abboud.
McSally, the first female combat pilot in American history, campaigned on issues such as immigration reform and combating the country’s opioid epidemic. None of the Republican candidates received President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
She stands to replace Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, who decided not to run for reelection because it would require him to shift his position on key issues such as immigration reform and trade. He also does not feel he could win over primary voters in “the president’s party,” Flake told reporters on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. more here
Bad news. She’s going to make McCain look not so bad after all.
I like Arpaio, but I have to blame Arpaio for some of this. He wouldn’t have won, should’ve stayed out and given Ward a chance.
So, linking back to the IOTW article about Duecy’s appointment to McCain’s seat, he can’t go wrong with Ward. But for marginalizing Sheriff Joe, Ward would have been neck-and-neck with McSally. Appoint ward and you get the top two Republican contenders in the state.
CRYOJOHN- Assuming Ducey doesn’t put Cindy McCain it the seat. I hope he’s not that dumb.
She is so far left the Dem will look conservative in comparison!
In Cal liberal GOP like her would lose – as the last 15 statewide elections(Gov + Sen) have proved beyond a reasonable doubt. I know notes Az is as conservative as Cal. but if is nearly as conservative as Cal she will be 2nd.
put in Ward. a win for all
The sheriff should have stayed out of it, a shame the ego out powers wisdom.
Agree that Arpaio has a ‘God’s gift’ problem, but ultimately the sum of Ward + Arpaio was less then McSally, so the outcome would be the same.
Unless I’m missing something.
not being a resident, what pray is the issues with McSally in regards to conservative values and elecability?
I was looking into McSally and for one she hasn’t cost the U.S. millions in wrecked aircraft she is a moderate but honestly she could be a notch up from the previous now no more senator Mc there are no POWs McCain.
we should give Arizona to Mexico for making the US deal with McShame and Flake as two Senators for decades now……
AZ needs some better candidates.
McCain was pushing for McSally. That tells me all I need to know about her.
