Republicans hope to fend off Democratic surge in Kansas

WaEx: Republicans on Tuesday were nervously monitoring a special election to fill a vacant Kansas House seat, as energized Democrats threatened an improbable upset.

Polls were scheduled to close in the Wichita-area 4th district at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

President Trump and the national GOP were forced to rush in and rescue Kansas Treasurer Ron Estes in this solidly conservative seat after internal polling showed him in danger of losing to Democratic attorney James Thompson.

Trump and Vice President Mike Pence recorded robo calls for Estes; Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas campaigned for him; and the National Republican Congressional Committee and Congressional Leadership Fund, the super PAC affiliated with House Speaker Paul Ryan, invested to boost GOP turnout.

Republican insiders expected the eleventh-hour push to work, but conceded that having to spend resources in a district Trump won by 27 points in November made them uncomfortable.

  1. Estes can get a coattail ride to an extent, but he has to be a good candidate, campaigner, retail politics. If he loses it won’t be on Trump. I don’t know anything about this guy, but I’ve seen plenty of stiffs running for office and losing.
Virginia has one running for governor right now. Ed Gillespie is a perpetual loser with a jellyfish spine. As exciting as a mashed potato sandwich on wonder bread. He’s going to lose this November.

  2. A Thompson win will mean extensive, Fakestream media reporting that “the people have risen-up and have sent a clear mandate, a repudiation of the Trump Agenda.” This will begin the “American spring.”

  3. A loss by Estes would have been bad news, particularly from a propaganda perspective. Ted Cruz campaigned for him, where is paul ryan. His opponent is a civil rights attorney, also known as a douche.
