ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Townspeople watching millions of gallons of orange-colored mine waste flow through their communities demanded clarity Tuesday about possible long-term threats to their water supply.
Colorado and New Mexico made disaster declarations for stretches of the Animas and San Juan rivers and the Navajo Nation declared an emergency as the toxic waste spread downstream toward Lake Powell in Utah.
EPA workers accidentally unleashed an estimated 3 million gallons of mine waste, including high concentrations of arsenic, lead and other heavy metals, as they inspected the long-abandoned Gold King mine near Silverton, Colorado, on Aug. 5.

You want a straight answer, OK here’s one for you.
Anything the EPA is telling you about the condition of the river water, the fish or fishing, nearby groundwater, the time before everything will be O-key Doh-key, the danger of permanent pollution of heavy metals, EVERYTHING will be a fucking lie.
However if there’s anyway they can use this to further undermine private property rights, bet on that too.
When they tell you the water is drinkable again, get that ragbitch McCarthy over and have her drink a glass.
Serve a nice big glass of that swill to EVERYONE who works at thee EPA.
Here is a before the EPA and after the EPA look at how well they protect the environment.
And their claim that is is not toxic? Why do mines need to contain it then?
The only thing that was an “accident” about it is the EPA thought it would look like an accident.
The attack on the EPA should be fierce Sort of like the attacks on EXXON and BP “accidents.” But judging from the demeanor of that weird looking taint, McCarthy, nothing will happen until we get a new Administration.
People of Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah, will be advised to boil water before drinking it, at least for a couple of weeks. Then everything will be OK, except for the fish, frogs, and foul.
Scrrreeeeaaaammmm!!!!
As a Citizen of the Southwest I demand that the fine should be:
The exact amount of the EPA’s operating budget for the next two hundred years
I am willing to negotiate, but if I have to give on anything I’ll want to see some floggings and hangings of EPA officials in return.
I want those individuals involved to be charged under RICO as they were obviously in a criminal conspiracy to commit this heinous crime against property and humanity. These individuals acted outside the law using their government positions to pursue their own criminal agenda.
They need to get it as individuals acting outside the law and not as a government agency. That would bring justice and really put the fear in all of these assholes that use their government positions to conspire to and commit acts outside the actual law in order to pursue their own agendas.
A straight answer from the GOV, Good luck with that one.
I was just through Durango and historic Silverton last fall. It’s a beautiful area. Durango is full of upper middle class liberals who are probably not taking this well.
Heck, I forgot to post the link earlier today. Sorry ’bout that. Here it is:

Fracking!!!!
Never let a crisis go without exploiting it. It would be nice if the republicans would use this disaster as leverage to eliminate the EPA. I won’t hold my breath.
Correctamundo. When this first became news (I live in CO) my first thought was to fine the EPA to death. Two nanoseconds later, I also realized that that would be the equivalent of fining all taxpaying US citizens for fuck-ups by INDIVIDUALS.
Let this be paid for by confiscating the salaries and bonuses (!) of any and ALL EPA personnel involved right up to the top.
Should be on the “day one” list of President Cruz..
