Another hobby I can no longer afford. Have you priced outboards lately? They’ve taken the fun out of life.

Takes me back to my RD and RZ days hearing that. A two stroke bike wouldn’t work hauling my fat ass around these days, but back when I weighed a buck forty five, there wasn’t a thing under 750 that I couldn’t best.

Plenty of funerals have resulted from this behavior.

I’m disappointed. When I read “River boat” I was hoping for side wheelers.

@Anon12:05:
Those aren’t outboard motors as we know them in the U.S. They’re long-tails, essentially small automotive-style motors mounted on a ball joint, with the prop at the end of a long crankshaft extension. No transmission or gears. These are in use all over the place in SE Asia, and most definitely not just for racing.

Oops. Above not meant to be a quotation.

SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY!
Ground pounding, heart-stopping quarter mile mayhem!
Down the quarter mile of death they go in their two stroke suicide machines!
Be there when they shake hands with the devil as they scream thru the burning gates of Hell!
We’ll sell you the whole seat, but you’ll only need the edge!
!! BE THERE !!

Hey! Let’s not only see how fast we can go but how close we can get to the spectators.

Not one helmet in sight
They sound like lawn mower motors winding out

A Izuzu turbo diesel is the favorite for the big boats.

Bass boat guy here. I’ve owned half a dozen bass boats. Part of the fun, a good portion of the fun, of that sport is the speed of the boats. I currently own a Champion 206 with a Merc 250 on the back end of it. The boats a solid 80 mph boat. The fastest bass boat around was a Gambler with a 300 hp Merc. That boat was a solid 100 mph boat. At 21 feet long. There are less than 100 offshore racer that will bust 100 mph. And those are a lot longer hulls. When bass boats are at speed there’s about 8 inch of transom in the water. Not real stable. To put this into perspective these guys are doing 125 mph. No wonder they’re not wearing life vests. Won’t do them any good anyway.

watch out for the brown “trout” if you go in the water
My youngest brother quite often goes to the Webb Slough boat races down in the small town of St. Johns, Wash. both in the Spring and again in autumn. We also used to go bird hunting for both pheasants and quail down in that area between St. Johns and Washtucna back in the late 60’s and early 70’s with my dad and some of his friends. Those races are the biggest events in St. John’s calendar every year for the local merchants in that small town with all the people attending the boat races there.

Had occasion to do “Salmon-a-Rama” a few times out of Racine WI. 50K in prizes and the single day boat contest was a “shotgun start.” Can be interesting when you’re only in a 24 footer and the big guys take off with no concern for the little guys.
Fish stories I got a few…

What Bass Boats do best, 80 mph, 25 mph wind, white caps.
This reminded me of the Guayaquil-Vinces Regatta. Small runabouts with modified outboards racing flat out for 68 miles (5 miles added to this year’s course because of construction, for a total of 73 miles. Scheduled for March 30.). Those guys are crazy, but not nearly as crazy as racing big boats.

Uncle Al,
Those drive units are becoming popular, either air cooled or water cooled on the big ones.
Some have lower units but the reason is clear, low water performance and stump jumping capablities.
They have damn tough lower units that can take the rough treatment given them.

Swamp is tough with hidden cypress knees, dead falls and stumps.
As a young man we used oars, paddles and poles, times were slower.

Webb Slough damn auto correct strikes again
I didn’t know bass could swim that fast.
