Rolling Stones Drummer Charlie Watts Has Died – IOTW Report

Rolling Stones Drummer Charlie Watts Has Died

LONDON (AP) — Charlie Watts, the self-effacing and unshakeable Rolling Stones drummer who helped anchor one of rock’s greatest rhythm sections and used his “day job” to support his enduring love of jazz, has died, according to his publicist. He was 80.

Bernard Doherty said Tuesday that Watts “passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family.”

“Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also as a member of The Rolling Stones one of the greatest drummers of his generation,” Doherty said.

Watts had announced he would not tour with the Stones in 2021 because of an undefined health issue. MORE HERE

  1. I never knew much about Watts. Now I have read that he was a bit nerdy, lived clean of the drugs and groupies, only smoked, and had a short bout of alcohol.

In other words, he seemed to be the normal one.

    RIP

“How the hell is Keith Richards still alive?”

He’s not. It’s just that the massive quantities of drugs keep him preserved, rigor mortis keeps him upright, and they’ve figured out how to keep his postmortem myoclonic jerking on beat so you can’t tell the difference…

  3. He married one woman before I was born and kept her for over 5 decades while touring with the rock band once billed as the evil version of the Beatles.

    That’s pretty impressive.

…I dont know if you can say “the good die young” in this case, but you CAN say the good die FIRST…

RIP Mr. Watts. May the Lord comfort your wife, daughter, and grandchildren.

  4. Fun Fact: To get the main lyrics for “Sympathy For The Devil”, they just set the timeline of Keith Richards’ life to music, and the rest is history…

“Please allow me to introduce myself
I’m a man of wealth and taste
I’ve been around for a long, long years
Stole million man’s soul an faith
And I was ’round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
    Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate
    Pleased to meet you
    Hope you guess my name
    But what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game
    Stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
    Killed Tsar and his ministers
    Anastasia screamed in vain
    I rode a tank
    Held a general’s rank
    When the blitzkrieg raged
    And the bodies stank
    Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
    Ah, what’s puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah
    I watched with glee
    While your kings and queens
    Fought for ten decades
    For the gods they made
    I shouted out
    Who killed the Kennedys?
    When after all
    It was you and me”
-“Sympathy For The Devil”, Rolling Stones

..is the answer to “Guess My Name” satan…or Keith Richards?

    …YOU decide…

  5. Second best thing about the Stones was Charlies drumming

Not quite as good as Richards guitar work, but better than Jagger’s vocals

Thats like, just my opinion, man

  6. One of the best drummers in rock & roll. Sadly, I’ve never seen them live. They were a big money arena act by the time I was of concert going age. My wife and I were considering getting tickets to the COTA show later this year, and hesitated when we found out he wasn’t going to be part of the tour.

  7. RIP Charlie

So many memories rocking to The Stones, back in the good ol’ days when concerts were only five bucks.

Thoughts and Prayers to your family. 🕊❤🙏

  8. I had that octagonal shaped album in the sixties. I no longer have it and don’t know what happened to it. I think Watts is on the right of the cover picture.

My fave RS song: Ruby Tuesday. I don’t know why. Most people wouldn’t select it. It evokes in me a somewhat sad feeling from ca 1966-1967. Just a feeling, not a memory. Brian Whats-his-name played the flute beautifully.

  9. Read an article many moons ago about Charlie Watts car collection. He didn’t drive, but had a very impressive collection of cars. All the way from classic Rolls Royce to modern Ferrari’s. The best part was that he would have custom suits tailored for him to match the cars. He would start them up(see what I did there?)& just rev the engine as he liked the sound they made. So eccentric & cool!

  10. Back on the thread this past Sunday about Don Everly’s death, JD Hasty commented that Tom T Hall had died over the weekend as well. So I joked:

    “…stirrin the pot August 22, 2021 at 11:29 pm

Damn JD, who’s next, Mick Jagger?…”

Sorry Charlie, I didn’t mean to jinx you. RIP

  11. Watts, like Ringo, was the timepiece that kept the songs together

without either one the songs would crumble into mediocrity

… RIP Charlie … you helped create a rock legend
