Santa hospitalized after his “fat shaming” comments to kid went viral

Crowder had spent nearly a decade portraying St. Nicholas in the town’s Santa House and was known to buy toys for the needy and help out at nursing homes

N&O: A Forest City man who resigned as Santa in the town’s Christmas house after apparently telling a 9-year-old boy to “lay off” the burgers and fries has been hospitalized since Wednesday with a blood clot in his lung, his niece says.

The man, Earl Crowder, woke up Wednesday with trouble breathing and was taken to a hospital, his niece, Kelly Butler, told television news station WLOS. He is still hospitalized, Butler said, but she didn’t say where.

“He was very heartbroken” after the incident with the boy, Butler told WLOS. “In fact, his first thoughts, he wanted to cut his hair and shave his beard.”

Butler also suggested that Crowder might have been in pain on Saturday when 9-year-old Anthony Mayse said Crowder told him to “lay off the hamburgers and French fries.”

His comments reached far beyond the town of roughly 7,500 about 65 miles west of Charlotte, being picked up by international news media. Read more

SNIP: I wonder if the reason Santa told the kid to watch his diet is because Santa was overweight and  having problems with his health.
Was it an inappropriate time make the comment? Yeah.
Should Santa have gotten all that grief over it on social media, even after he apologized? No.
Why does every little insignificant thing that happens to a person need to go viral?
The internet is a double edged sword. If Santa dies, the boy will be known as the kid who killed Santa.
And that will go viral, too.

  1. when islam sets off a nuke in a suitcase and brings down a city, killing hundreds of thousands, or china attacks taiwan, or russia sees an opening to move against the west, perhaps people will have other things to do and concern themselves with than social media, computer games, and pokemon

holy shit, what a shallow, overly-sensitive, uneducated, pussified society we have become

    count me out

  2. I’m all for this selfless Santa. He probably did the chubs a favor by warning him what was waiting for him if he didn’t watch what he ate. The boy is fat and eating the wrong things. Why try to blame Santa? Bratty little snowflake.

We have a kid like this in the family so I have the right to be Grinch.

  3. Momma is apparently supplying the chow that her son is obviously over indulging in. She is not doing him any favors by this and he will pay for it with health issues in the near future. While it isn’t Santa’s place to tell this kid to watch what he eats, it’s too bad Santa seems to care more about the child’s health than the parents. What a shame. It only gets tougher to lose the weight the older you get.

  4. Santa sounds like a fine fellow.

The kid IS fat and yes, he needs to lay off the burgers and fries.
And the kid badly needs to get outdoors, play siome sports and get some exercise to lose weight before he becomes a fat teenager.

I’m guessing he has a Single Mom, and she’s also overweight, and she’s loving her Fifteen Seconds of Viral Fame.

  5. The message is lost on those who care more about “killing the messenger” in any situation. In this case, the kid is too fat for his age and is looking at future health problems. He should be glad that Santa cared more than his mom apparently does.
