Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) Slams SunTrust Bank CEO for Refusing Business to Detention Facilities That Care for Migrant Children

IJR:

Congressman Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) slammed SunTrust Bank CEO William Rogers for refusing to do business with detention facilities providing care for migrant families at the border.

SunTrust bank is one of several major banks that has refused to partner with businesses responsible for operation detention facilities at the southern border. When they announced their decision to cut their business relationships with these facilities, the bank called it a “deeply complex issue,” but decided to bend to the demands of their stakeholders.

During testimony regarding a proposed merger between SunTrust and BB&T banks before the House Financial Services Committee on Wednesday, Duffy pressed Rogers on why they decided to refuse to do business with companies that help law enforcement uphold the law by providing housing for migrant families as they are legally processed.

Duffy set Rogers up by painting a picture of how they could fall victim to the outrage cycle currently entrapping the detention facilities at the southern border.

  1. I bank with SunTrust.

I threatened to cancel my Costco branded Visa issued through Citi when Citi declared they would no longer do business with gun manufacturers, but didn’t.

My mortgage is with Chase and I would refinance in a heartbeat even though the rate would be slightly higher if I had any assurance that Chase wouldn’t end up buying the new mortgage which is how I ended up with them now. Chase cancelled being the payment processor for Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the Proud Boys.

I think it’s time I took a stand and said goodbye to SunTrust.

  2. Thank you, Congressman Duffy, for your stance against Sun Trust Bank! It’s outstanding that we are lucky to have a representative in D.C. that actually has a spine and is not afraid to show it! BTW, I saw the clip of you questioning Mr. Rogers on the Dan Bongino show this afternoon…he had good things to say about you!

  3. @Had Enough – And I bank with BB&T and have done so for more than 20 years. When the merger was announced I was troubled by it: as Duffy said, smaller banks are better.

I’m further troubled by SunTrust’s Rogers’ decision to de-bank companies associated with border detention facilities. Duffy is right again: this is a social decision, not a business decision.

Finally, I’m GREATLY troubled by the announced leadership of Truist (awful name, that) post-merger. Although BB&T’s King, whom I admire greatly, will be mostly in charge until 2021-2022, after that the squishy Rogers will be in charge.

I’ve decided that now is the time to write Mr. King a letter, and visit my local BB&T branch manager, and explain that if things go as I fear, I will be taking my business elsewhere, and explain exactly why.
