Sen. Cruz: Vital helicopter tracking system was turned off at time of plane collision in DC

Just The News- The Federal Aviation Administration describes the system as “advanced surveillance technology that combines an aircraft’s positioning source, aircraft avionics, and ground infrastructure to create an accurate surveillance interface between aircraft” and air traffic control.

More information has emerged in the investigation into the mid-air collision over the Potomac River between an American Airlines jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter, as a lawmaker reveals the chopper had turned off a vital tracking system prior to the collision.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, addressed reporters following a closed-door briefing with federal authorities investigating the collision that killed 67 people.

Cruz said the chopper had turned off its Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast system.

The technology is considered more “precise than radar.” more

  1. If the helicopter shut off its ADSB Out in the KDCA area, then they were violating FAA regs and guaranteeing that the passenger get pilots could not see them on their primary traffic monitoring screens. JFC.

I’m a little familiar with how those procedure work for life critical situations. I’m thinking you are too. They should have two redundant back up systems. This entire episode is one failure after another. Starting with, why in theee hell are they running those night time military exercises at 9:30 PM when the flight pattern is super busy? Why not at 3:30 AM? What, it’s to dark then? Remember, they had a close call the night before. Odds are all these agencies have degraded so far under the Biden coupe that they will need to be rebuilt from the ground up.

  3. @Brad…How does the helo crew turning off—or forgetting to turn on—the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast system become the fault of the tower? I agree with you that the tower bears some blame, but the blame goes higher and wider than the tower. It would be fair to say the all of this is on the government, IMO. To let culprits in the Army, the

Consider this, DRONES don’t have an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast system. What if that Helo were a DRONE? What’s the towers procedure if they have a DRONE in the flight path. And don’t forget, they had a near miss the night before. There’s more tan enough blame to go around in this cluster but it still starts and ends with the tower.

  6. Brad, how do you know that drones, especially military “drone helos”, don’t have ADS-B?

I slap on a tin-foil hat as quickly as the next guy or gal, but Occam’s razor makes me conclude that this was predictable fuckuppery committed with normal equipment by incompetent government employees. The only drones involved were sitting at desks in their FAA offices or their

Cheap hobby drones will not have ADS-B. The process is the same. The Towers response is shut everything down. Mean while they know they have an out of control Helo transversing runways to the point that they had the doomed airliner switch runways. it was no secret they had a problem on their hands. The HELO was 200 some feet above it’s ceiling. The Tower knew this. AND the same damn thing happened the night before. That is following Occam’s razor. No tin foil involved. It’s a logical argument. Bottom line is it’s the Towers responsibility to keep people from dying. They failed.
The Tower placed the Helo on a direct collision course with the passenger plane.

  8. The helo was supposedly on some sort of practice mission for an emergency extraction. Practice getting VIP’s out of DC in case of some sort of event. They may have had ADS turned off as part of the exercise. The tower should have picked up on that even if it were the case.

  9. Nolan,

From what I’ve heard, this was a routine recertification test, over the route that she would have to fly to evacuate bigshots from DC in the event of an emergency. Apparently, she went back to her aviation unit in VA after two cushy years as a WH aide/escort.

My questions also would be, in addition to DEI, was she two years off from flying a Black Hawk? Why was an aviator in an ostensibly crucial job given an assignment in the WH. What connections. And who wiped her internet presence before she was ID’d and put up all kinds of idiotic progressive crap and fantasy stuff about what a hero she was. It’s disgusting.

Last question is how does a pilot make a mistake like this, or was it deliberate.
