Sen. Jeff Flake(AZ) intends to block votes on court nominees until Republicans remove Cuban travel restrictions

If Flake was a Democrat, what would he be doing differently?

DC: Outgoing GOP Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona is blocking votes on all of President Donald Trump’s appeals court nominees to secure concessions from Republican leaders on tariffs and Cuban travel restrictions.

Flake, a Trump antagonist who is not seeking reelection amid floundering popularity with Arizona Republicans, has not openly addressed the matter, though his seat on a closely divided Senate Judiciary Committee gives him significant leverage over judgeships.

Roll Call first reported that Flake halted a committee vote on Georgia Supreme Court Justice Britt Grant’s nomination to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, the federal appeals court based in Atlanta. CNN confirmed late Wednesday that the senator will block all appeals court nominees to prompt discussions on relations with Cuba and the president’s escalating trade war with much of the industrial world.

Flake is one of 11 Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which issues recommendations on judicial nominees before a final confirmation vote. The GOP has a one-vote majority on the panel, making Flake’s cooperation essential if Republicans wish to process candidates.  more here

  1. Lobbyists gonna lobby. He’s using the last of his power to prove his bona fides with his Cuban friends. I half expect the m—erf—er to show up for hearings in a Che T-shirt.

  3. “IF” mcCONnell had any balls, self respect or leadership ability he would remove Flake from the Senate Judiciary Committee immediately.
He assigned him, he can remove him.

Grow a pair Mitch, or is this your design to screw Trump again?

  4. J Flake and J McCain were the only two people Az. could find willing and eager to be their US Senators? I suspect they might be evidence exhibits A & B for why the 17th amendment should be repealed.

  5. There is a cadre of immigrant-rights and open-borders advocates who have populated the staffs of Republican Senators and Representatives for decades.

I was invited to a stakeholders (I was a member of a Hispanic advocacy group at the time) meeting with Hatch’s staff about 25 years ago to discuss the, as yet, unnamed Dream Act. The staff member running the meeting was proposing resident tuition and amnesty.

Recognizing that tying one with the other would never get passed, I suggested they just stick to offering resident tuition, as existed in Utah at the time. Well, there was a period of uncomfortable silence, then the woman asked what good it would do the kids to get to go to college without getting amnesty. I responded, more than they would get when the legislation doesn’t pass. I then followed up that getting to go to college at affordable rates would give the kids a few more years to get their residency the old fashioned way — through marriage. Needless to say, I wasn’t invited back, and the Dream Act never came close to a vote as Hatch was later forced to abandon it or get primaried out (as Chris Cannon was).

That happened back in the days before the extreme polarization of the issue we face today. In a way, those activists got what they wanted — a defining issue to fundraise on. They never really cared about the welfare of immigrants, illegal or otherwise, or Dream Kids.

Flake, beyond being a nevertrumnper, pretends to be a traditional conservative (in the economic sense). Of course, being a tax and spend Establishment Republican kind of cancels the other stuff out. The Republican Party is filled with corporate welfare types and they now form the core of the nevertrumpers. Corporations benefit from Federal contracts and regulations. Corporations benefit from Obamacare, as they have been trying to unload the benefits burden onto government for decades. Corporations benefit from open borders as they need not raise wages and salaries because there is a near endless supply of people willing to work for less. Corporations love unilateral free trade, as they benefit from the low prices China’s dumping affords. Corporations love (Establishment) Republicans because Republicans cut corporate taxes while providing tax funds to reduce corporate inputs. Corporations hate Trump because they know he understands and has benefited from this arrangement — and is determined to end it.
