Several to be released in major Russia-US prisoner swap

Telegraph

Jailed journalist Evan Gershkovich is due to be released as part of the biggest prisoner swap between the US and Russia since the Cold War.

Mr Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, is to be freed alongside former US Marine Paul Whelan, according to people familiar with the situation.

The men, who are imprisoned in Russia on espionage charges that both they and the US deny, are currently being transported to destinations outside of Russia.  more

  1. Need a Fact Check . . .

Did or did not Trump make a speech last week saying any American hostages should be released before he takes office, or he will make that one of his immediate priorities.

    Just interesting timing here.

And Joe needs all the helps he and shes can get.

  2. None of what I read on this says who we are trading for these people. Also, Gershkowitz was arrested in, or after visiting, Yekaterinburg, which is a major Rusdian military industrial center. IIRC, so was Paul Whelan, whom Wiki describes as “a Canadian-born former United States Marine with U.S., British, Irish, and Canadian citizenship.” Sounds pretty spooky to me.

I also recall this, from February 2024:

“Russia’s main domestic intelligence agency has arrested a woman with dual U.S. and Russian citizenship on charges of treason, accusing her of collecting money for the Ukrainian military….The Federal Security Service said in a statement early Tuesday that the Los Angeles resident was arrested in the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg…”

Hmmm… What is it about that city? If you’re going to Russia, maybe you shouldn’t go there. Especially if you’re up to no good. But I’m sure they’re all innocent.

And again, who are we giving up for these people?

  3. Dear Vladimir Putin,

Congratulations on your recent prisoner swap! As a way to express our gratitude, we’d like to offer you the chance to remove as many of Washington D.C.’s government elite as you’d like, to do with them whatever you desire. They would make excellent house cleaners in the Kremlin and Moscow homes, but also as pig feeders. This is a one-time-only offer with no strings attached. In lieu of this offer, we’d also be very happy to accept your rendering of D.C. to glass at your earliest convenience.

    Sincerely,
    General ‘Ivory Handled Revolver’ Malaise

  4. “The Russian Federation handed over 16 people: oppositionists Vladimir Kara-Murza and Ilya Yashin, former chiefs of staff of Navalny Liliya Chanysheva and Ksenia Fadeeva, American journalists Evan Gershkovich and Alsou Kurmasheva, artist Sasha Skochilenko, Andrei Pivovarov, Vadim Ostanin, Kevin Leake, Paul Whelan, Oleg Orlov, Demuri Voronin, Patrick Schöbel and Herman Moizhes and Rico Krieger, who was previously pardoned in Belarus…In exchange, the Russian Federation is being handed over eight people convicted in various Western countries: the Dultsev couple, who admitted to working for the Russian special services and were convicted in Slovenia, Vadim Krasikov, sentenced to life in Germany for the murder of the former Chechen field commander Zelimkhan Khangoshvili, Pavel Rubtsov, who was imprisoned in Poland, Mikhail Mikushin, who posed as a Brazilian and was detained for espionage in Norway, as well as three men who served time in the United States – Roman Seleznev, Vladislav Klyushin and Vadim Konoshc…”

On a related note, how are the two hostages of Boeing and NASA doing in the ISS? Did Russia resupply them? Is Russia going to rescue them?
