My mother would sing that song every time I lit one up.

I quit cigarettes almost 40 years ago. My last carton of Marlboros cost $2.34 at the Commissary one Pioneer Kassern. With everything we know about those evil things, I can’t imagine why anyone would continue huffing them. Like my buddy Louise Rocha told me when he made me snuff out my last one, “and you don’t even get high, so why bother?”

When we went out out sea while I was in the Navy in the mid 70’s once we got out into international waters 3 miles out from US shores cigarettes were .16 a pack and you could buy a carton of cigs for $1.60 with a limit of 10 cartons at a time. Needless to say the smokers took advantage of those prices. When the smoking lamp was lit on board the Kitty Hawk the heavy smokers would chain smoke them like there was no tomorrow. I never smoked thank God but a lot of the other guys did. Pop/soda was also .15 a can and we drank a lot of pop not just for energy but also because the water on the ship was not all that great and often I swear we could taste JP5 jet fuel mixed in it.
Of course when I die I will not. But pushing 80; aint dead yet.
My Dad’s Dad smoked 3 packs a day for 75 years; At the age of 85 he reroofed his house.
Spent 5 hrs a day pushing hot tar with a mop. Smoke break every 10 min.
For those <60 pushing tar is very hare work for a 30 year old!
So I will smoke myself to death! But IF I get to the Golden Gate I will barge right in!

I quit a three pack a day addiction 40 years ago while driving a big rig.
Hardest thing I ever did.
To this day, I sometimes have nightmares of having a cigarette in my mouth and wake up in a wash of sweat.

My late wife quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey on Feb. 1, 1994. She was a Christian and had been smoking for 20 years or so starting in her teens. God told her to quit smoking for the sake of myself and our 3 children and she did. And for the next 19 years until she died in 2013 she never smoked another cigarette but just the smell of other people smoking around her would drive her nuts, it made her sick. She once won a 3 day stay at the Coeur d’ Alene Casino and hotel in 2004 in a raffle from Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane where she worked for over 20 years and we stayed there for a mini vacation but the smell from all the smokers at the CDA tribe casino was so bad that she had to take a shower every time we went back to our room to get the smoke smell off of her and she’d change her clothes as well. I am so glad and proud that she quit smoking when she did but I was also aiding and abetting her habit by buying cigarettes for her so it was partly my fault as well. It worked out well for both of us when she quit smoking cold turkey.

I always thought Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen wrote that song.
I had no idea it was Hank.
