Soaring Consumer Confidence: Are Americans Happy It’s Trump, or Just Happy It’s Over?

Bloomberg:

On the surface, the message from the University of Michigan’s final reading of consumer sentiment for November is that President-elect Donald Trump will fix what ails the nation — fast.

The consumer expectations index of the survey rose by 8.4 points from October to 85.2 — a one-month gain last exceeded in the December 2011 — a testament to households’ optimistic view on the outlook for the U.S. economy and their own pocketbooks.

And ‘optimistic’ might be an understatement. According to the latest report, in some cases, Americans are the most hopeful they have been in more than a decade. For the first time since 2006, 37 percent of households said they expect their personal finances to improve in 2017. Also hitting decade highs: real income expectations, as wage growth continues to gain strength in a broadening swath of the economy.

  1. Wow, I can only speak to my own experience but when most here were not necessarily on the Trump Train I typed many times this guy would spur on the economy if elected before he even took office. Obviously it’s happening. So yes, I’m Freaken optimistic.

  2. Well, all three of the largest indices have been up at the same time for days — something that hasn’t happened in decades and the DOW has remained over 19 for the past three days. The dollar is stronger than it’s been in fourteen years. Oil and gas prices are down (and over the holiday weekend!). The adults who make their livings watching the economic outlook of the U.S. are thrilled. It could be just because it’s over, but I don’t think so. I think we are seeing the country and world’s pleasant response to a man who actually has a good deal of experience in business, including high finance, about to take the helm of the world’s largest think tank/innovator/producers. I read an article the other day about how historically dogged Americans have always been about solving problems and providing new, competing solutions; it’s finely honed DNA of the American spirit. I’m excited to be living through this history and can’t wait to see what’s next. I don’t think we could have found a better cheerleader than Trump. I keep going back to the video from London Real and unabashed Dan Pena who said, “Donald Trump will rock the world.”

  3. It’s neither, in my opinion. It’s not Trump per se, it is that b.o. is out of the White House after a truckload of Febreezes, but it’s a renewed faith in our system. OUR system. It’s ours and no one else’s.

Citizens want to be patriotic, fly the flag, abide by the constitution, have good old American Pride and Values. But for 8 years, they’ve been told they didn’t build that, or not politically correct. But now and to coin the movie “Network,” we’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore.

Donald Trump is only a man as was b.o. If he turns to the dark side like b.o. was from the beginning, will we as a nation, let him proceed as we allowed the current constitutional usurper to do (and congress-those fornicators don’t get a free ride either) for the past 8 years? I hope not.

  4. AA, I’m a simple machinist but I know this. Wall Street and Main Street are no longer connected. I know DJT is smart enough to know manufacturing adds huge dollars to our economy. In fact I’d say DJT is smart enough to know that with out a strong manufacturing base you don’t have an economy. I can argue that five ways from Sunday. Don’t put any stock in the markets. ANY. That markets coming down soon due to Barry’s pumping. But on the flip side I had a freind that was an awesome Biz guy. 20 years older than me. He use to tell me money doesn’t like sitting still, it likes to move. Obamanamics has had money sitting still for 8 years, Bush for at least two. I’m thinking we’re back with a vengeance

  5. Key word is in your last sentence Bad_Brad, “we’re.” It doesn’t have squat to do with anything/anyone but, “we.” If the “we” leaves us like it did the past 8 years, “we’re” doomed.

Again, I don’t think this is in any way, shape, or form about Trump. This is about, “WE, the people.” 😉

  6. Sorry, hit ‘enter’ too quick… meant to address AA’s comment regarding Don Pena’s comment. b.o. rocked the world when he first came into office. I believe the difference is, ‘we’ patriots are going to rock the world THIS go’round.

  7. BB — Agreed, but going up is still a better indicator of consumer confidence than going down. And the post-election rally has been nothing short of spectacular.

For a great read on money liking to move, read the linked Imprimus about the unique and essential piece of that movement in its role in class mobility in the U.S. Boiled down, we must have class mobility in order to push back the forces of socialism. And we can only do that if we have a sufficiently diverse jobs sector. This fool’s paradise of a “service economy” almost cooked our goose. Good read:

  8. This is all as good as we could have hoped for. Real optimism with a real leader in the White House. I am going to enjoy the hell out of this Thanksgiving! Cheers to all you guys and gals from iOTW! Even though I only know you all in cyberspace, you are all good friends! Keep up the good work and stay safe.

  9. @Big Gun — Certainly–agreed! But it would have been bigley harder without a strong leader and advocate in the W.H., yes? Can’t wait to see what America, unplugged, does in the next few years.

  10. @BigGun — forgot to add, chiming in with BB, that there are a lot of smallholders who have just been hunkering down with their money, not expanding business and not starting business because of the regulatory burden, taxes and the futility of trying to make an honest buck under obama and it would have just continued under clinton. As for me, I didn’t want more of what I’ve got left going to the shiftless and entitled — you know, all those folks who still can’t believe Trump was elected?

  11. AA, true. I think that ultimately that we are all saying the same thing only different. A strong leader in the WH is definitely a factor, but we have yet to see the fortitude of the president elect as well as the fortitude of the people to allow or disallow.

  12. “Bad_Brad, I agree. I’m sure you know the rest of my thoughts.”

Yes we are simpatico. And it may come to that. I’m good. And if I could pick a team you would be on it. We are not alone.

  13. BB — I may have said this before, so excuse me if I repeat. I was joking with another volunteer who is a firearms trainer that I wasn’t sure who was going to be more disappointed in a Trump win, Killery or all the people waiting for the second Civil War. LOL!

  14. The country and our allies have been under the commie boot of Obama, a marxist despot for eight years. Now that we have an actual patriotic American President elect in the White House soon, I’m ecstatic! Sure there’s work to do but, overall, I thank God for His mercy and grace – the torment is over.
BTW,Thanks joe6pak, agreed. What a truly Happy Thanksgiving we will have today.

  15. this is just out on youtube. they are going to recount three states, thinking the voting machines were hacked by Russians..lol. The supposed scientists just want access to flip more votes to Cankles. This shit will never end, will it? Someone needs to rid us of that demon in a pantsuit.
