Stanford: Climate Change Increases Suicide Rates

KFI: Researchers at Stanford University have recently concluded that climate change greatly affects our moods, even linking the rise in temperatures to a rise in suicide rates.

The study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change and led by Marshall Burke, assistant professor in the Department of Earth System Science at Stanford University, found that a temperature increase of one degree Celsius corresponds to a 0.7 percent increase of suicides in the U.S. and 2.1 percent increase in Mexico.

As the climate continues to get warmer and more heatwaves continually break temperature records, the researchers estimate that between 9,000 and 40,000 additional suicides will take place in the U.S. and Mexico by 2050.

The researchers also observed around 600 million social media updates during warmer months and saw an “uptick in depressive language.”

  1. When I get too globally warmed, I find that having a couple of cold beers is much more preferable than suicide. I mean, there’s no reason to go off the deep end,
    is there?

  2. ………“the researchers estimate that between 9,000 and 40,000 additional suicides will take place in the U.S. and Mexico by 2050.”

This number of “suicides” pales in comparison to the average number of 3,000 abortions PER DAY in America alone.
If these faked assholes are so damn concerned about saving lives I strongly suggest they redirect their efforts.
In the meantime they can take a Flying FU$K ON A ROLLING DONUT.

  3. If you take a dude out of the Arctic Circle at -40 C and put him in Mexico at 36 C, with a 2.1% increase per degree, you’re telling me that dude now has a 159.6% chance of killing himself?

Geez, not giving the dude much of a chance, are ya?

  4. I say there is confounding at work here. A hot day in New York, NY Liberals getting desperate about finding a way to get rid of Trump, their knights all have tarnished armor, all thay have to run is Biden and Pocahantas, their platform is fag-boy rights and letting in more rotten invaders.

  5. Published in “Natural Climate Change”?

    From the study’s abstract:

“…we find that suicide rates rise 0.7% in US counties and 2.1% in Mexican municipalities for a 1 °C increase in monthly average temperature. This effect is similar in hotter versus cooler regions and has not diminished over time, indicating limited historical adaptation. Analysis of depressive language in >600 million social media updates further suggests that mental well-being deteriorates during warmer periods. We project that unmitigated climate change (RCP8.5) could result in a combined 9–40 thousand additional suicides (95% confidence interval) across the United States and Mexico by 2050, representing a change in suicide rates comparable to the estimated impact of economic recessions, suicide prevention programmes or gun restriction laws.”

Back in 1986 or ’87, there was a study that concluded one was more likely to be killed by a random terror attack at an airport than to find a compatible mate and marry by the age of 30. Anyone else remember that study? About ten years later, it was debunked as silly science. This climate change study has all the same characteristics and conclusions — all based on strangely extrapolated “evidence.” It causes one to wonder, at the very least, about which particular U.S. counties and which Mexican municipalities they are using to reach their conclusions. Seems like a rather specific and very odd data set. If so-called climate change is the culprit, wouldn’t it affect people in a similar manner regardless if they lived in, say, Snohomish versus King county (side by side on a map)? Or is it because traffic-stressed Seattle is in King County versus small-town values of Snohomish county? Mighty strange conclusions which seem to leave out valuable data, wouldn’t you say? And that’s just one of the most obvious points on which to criticize their “findings.”

This looks all the world like a bunch of guys who need to get published to satisfy tenure requirements. Stanford is probably one of the few remaining skools to require that.

  6. Their predictions about suicide are about as reliable as their predictions on the climate. In fact, the only ones likely to kill themselves are the grifters and liars that are afraid of losing their grants and payoffs… like the ones that were caught in england at the CRU. Remember, if we were to believe anything these corrupt liars ever said, like AlGore predicted we would all be 20 feet under water if we didnt fund his Carbon Credit Exchange risky scheme, we would all be drowned 20 feet under water, dead and gone. These demons are desperate to “keep the hoax alive”, as Jesse Jackson might say, it pays really great and beats getting a real job.

  7. @TheMule:

The good news is that it only increases suicide rates among the batshit crazy assholes whom we’re all better off not having around anymore.

I think I’ll apply for a grant to investigate the relationship between suicide amongst progs and the time they spend watching or reading alarmist climate change phony studies and other propaganda. Oh, and listening to NPR. Gotta check that out, too.

  8. If we are able to determine that a minor rise in temperature is causing humans to self-destruct as a result, can we not also correlate that this is a nature induced solution to climate temperature increases. Thus the natural order of the Earth is to have heat generating, CO2-emitting beings ‘naturally’ reduce their number to minimize or even reverse the climate increasing causality? This is the wonder of the nature! Likely those that choose to eliminates themselves are those that are the least efficient units.
