Steve Martin, Martin Short Won’t Talk Trump During Show: ‘We’re Not Here To Preach’

DC: Steve Martin and Martin Short said when fans come to their stand-up show, they shouldn’t expect to hear President Donald Trump’s name because “we’re not here to preach.”

“Before the election, we did a lot of Trump material, a lot of political material, and it was fine,” Martin shared with IndieWire Wednesday.

“After the election, you started to hear comments from the audience, whether it was a yay or a boo, and we said, ‘We don’t want that. We’re not here to preach,’” he added.

“So we started limiting the divisive political material from the act because you get that on late-night TV,” Martin continued. “It’s not something you want to pay [for]. We’re just trying to be funny.”

“When it comes to politics, you don’t want to make half the audience feel like they’re inappropriate,” Short explained. “So even when we’re doing Jiminy Glick, we try to go back and forth.”  read more

  1. As opposed to the major network national news shows at seven PM every night. Funny how the opening segment on every network has the same title. “That Fucking Trump!”

From a purely sociological standpoint, it’s flabbergasting the amount of headspace he occupies with these leftists. He may have supplanted the need for shelter, clothing and sex (well, maybe not perverted kid fucking sex) in those people. Still a lot of fat leftists so I presume the food thing is still ticking along.

  3. I gave up on “comedy” years ago. One of my oldest friends, when we are together on a Saturday night, must watch SNL. I no longer argue, I take a big ol’ churchill out on the porch.

  4. My dad taught Steve how to play banjo back in the 60’s when they both worked at Disneyland. I don’t know what that has to do with politics – my dad thought all politicians were shysters.

  5. Ummmm. Right. I think the real reason is that Martin Short has been getting a ton of shit for his late nite appearances bashing Trump.

    He’s like Baldwin crazy.

Still….. love that Jiminy Glick. The only interview I’ve ever seen with Mel Brooks where Mel gave up and walked off set.

  6. Fritz – my dad started playing in the Disneyland band in 57 and retired in 82. He was a tall skinny guy and played trumpet piano and banjo in the park. He played with Dick Jurgens and other big bands prior to that. He played with the Smothers Brothers in Tahoe in the 50’s. That’s all I can say on the internet.

  7. A rambling man and Ed’ Grimley, was funny way back. Since then I have only found them to be both annoying in attempts at comedy. Good in drama, though. Wish the complete no talents could take a cue,,,
