Tesla goes to trial over fatal autopilot crash

Silicon Valley: Tesla Inc. is on trial over claims that the company is partly to blame for a fatal 2019 crash in Florida that occurred when the Autopilot system in a Model S allegedly failed to detect a parked SUV.

Family members of the woman killed in the crash, Tesla engineers and auto-safety experts are expected to provide testimony in a federal courtroom in Miami during the jury trial, which started Monday and is set to last three weeks.

Only a handful of Tesla crash cases have gone to trial. The electric vehicle maker has struck confidential accords to resolve several cases that blamed defective technology for deadly accidents. more

  1. GOOD. The biggest problem with ALL of this “self-driving” crap is the subject of LIABILITY. Sadly, too many republicans are happy to side with the manufacturers in “limiting liability” ALL because the democrats align with the lawyers. Hey, HOW ABOUT THE VICTIMS??? Ultimately this will simply be another way to socialize the costs and privatize the profits for companies that truly don’t care about anything but profits. Taking responsibility for one’s actions must ALSO be at the foundation of any policy made.

  2. MrLiberty – When comes to lawyers, they’re getting outrageous percentages anymore these days.
It’s one for you and one for me, one for you and one for me…
Too bad it doesn’t work that way for black eye’s, busted noses and broken ribs!

  3. Harry…know well. Lost 40% in the settlement over my father’s death. My point of course is that if politicians are going to get involved (the screwed up court system is already the result of their meddling/control), then they need to actually care about the VICTIMS, not the lawyers or the companies for a change. What is sad is that is that we are running headlong into allowing this computer-controlled carnage ALL because people are simply too lasy to take personal responsibility for their time behind the wheel.

  4. Your wife and kids should be able to jump in the car and run to the store without you worrying about them getting mowed over by a big out of control battery. Someone in the Federal Government approved Tesla’s request for putting these thing on public streets. Ultimately that’s your villain. And they have to be brought into the law suit.

The very same politicians who vote to pass liability for some idiot they have absolutely no responsibility for on to firearms manufacturers are the ones who vote to shield manufacturers for the injury their negligence caused.

  6. Autopilot on a Tesla is just cruise control. It is LUDICRUS to think the maker of cruise control is responsible for a crash. I NEVER use autopilot on my Tesla. I do use full self driving (supervised) on the interstate and while it is flawless, you HAVE to have your hands on the wheel and your eyes have to be on the road. IT makes the trip a dream to drive. No stress. I can’t recommend it enough.

  7. With full self driving, if you arn’t applying pressure to the wheel, in about 3 seconds it will beep and flash on the dash to grab the wheel and if you don’t the whole screen flashes red it beebs like crazy and FSD switches off and the car immediately starts to slow down. That was the case back in 2019 when you were using “autopilot” which isn’t ANYTHING other than a version of cruise control that holds the speed and keeps you in your lane. And like any version of adaptive cruise, it won’t get too close to another vehicle but to think that you can just close your eyes and drive you are an idiot
