Seattle Times: It was on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 30, driving in Ballard, that Dave Welding entered the world of car computers gone amok.
He drives a 2016 Mazda hatchback. It turns out that about the same time, the same thing was happening to other local Mazda owners who had this in common:
They drove a 2014 to 2017 model Mazda, and they had tuned into KUOW, 94.9 on the FM dial, the NPR station. That’s all it took.
Somehow the signal the station sent to the modern HD Radio that’s part of the Mazda infotainment center had, as Welding puts it, “fried” a major component. more
I love it!
That is what you get for listening to NPR!
Take that morons.
The punishment fits the crime… Not that they would *ever* WANT to tune away from NPR..
“glitch” or “feature”?
It’s an evil plot by Ford to finally drive a stake through Mazda’s heart. They’ve been trying for like the last 40 years or so.
Even in the little video clip at the link showing the infotainment screen NPR is harping about diversity. Pick any minute of the day and that’s what they yammer on about, why would anyone voluntarily tune into that nonsense? LOL, he deserves it.
I guess now if you drive a Mazda the only radio station you will get will only have All (liberal) Things Considered. And does it only affect Seattle only or do other Mazda owners across the country have the same problem. IMAGINE, not driving a Mazda.
NPR, National Pablum Radio, radio for liberal pablum pukers.
I had a 14 Mazda 3. Loved that car. never had an issue with the radio but then again I never listen to NPR
Old coot
Mazda broke from Ford years ago.
When I worked at radio stations back in 20 years ago I’d get a lot of phone calls from people who had new cars with RDS. The dealer had set the radio up to automatically tune to the favorite genre, usually rock, and that was our station in town.
Learn how to use your radio, people.
And, thanks for listening!
There hasn’t been decent radio anywhere since WKRP.
XM radio was good (and commercial-free as promised) until the jerks at Sirius swallowed them.
My 100’s of CDs collection still pays big dividends, esp when I drive cross-country.
And you guys think I’m paranoid.
It’d be even funnier if the radio auto tuned to KTTH and forced these lefties to listen to talk radio. Images of Rush or the American flag popping up now and again…the horror! 😂
Dear Anonymous:
Ford still owns an 11% share of Mazda as of right now.

Nothing like the old days when Ford Ranger and Mazda B series trucks, Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute, etc. we’re identical except for badging. I had a 1995 Ranger (virtually same as Mazda B3000) for many years.
I owned a Mazda RX2 and a Mazda RX3 – great until seals went out.
Currently have a 2016 Mazda 6 with the Bose system covered in the article. Mine still has full functionality. I don’t subscribe to XM after trial run and occasional promotional free trials. I don’t play CD 💿 as it is easier to play iPhone music via Bluetooth.
People still buy Mazda’s?
I had an RX-2 long ago.
Wankels from wankers.
They need to make Apex seals last as long as piston rings.
Mazda currently uses 2.0 L and 2.5 L naturally aspirated engines with some upper end models using 2.5 turbo. They use a 6 speed automatic (NO CVT) with manual transmission available in Miata and some other models.
